My first exposure to Chobits came through watching the anime series. I had been wanting to read the manga, but hadn't had the chance to try to get it through my local library system. One day, my older daughter came home from school, and said she had checked out a copy of the first volume of Chobits from her school library. She produced the manga from the backpack, and I borrowed it from her and read it for myself.
In the series, Hideki Motosuwa is attending cram school so he can pass the college entrance exams. He doesn't have much money, and really wants a Persocom (an android that can be used as a personal computer). One evening, Hideki finds a Perosocom abandoned among a pile of garbage. He takes the Persocom back to his apartment, and eventually figures out how to turn it on. When he does activate the Persocom, all the can say is "Chi" (so this is what Hideki names her). The series focuses on Hideki as he tries to teach Chi, focus on his own studies, and work.
Overall, the anime was rather faithful to the first volume of the manga; however, in the anime, they took one short gag (Hideki needing to get underwear for Chi) and turned it into the basis for a complete episode of the series.
There is some nudity shown in the Chobits manga, as well as some sexual innuendo. I would personally recommend this manga series to older teenagers and adults.
I wrote this review after reading a copy of this manga that my daughter checked out from her school library.
