Clannad

The first disc of a really boring anime

A Quick Tip by stormtamer

As you may (or may not) know, I don't often buy anime, but rent from Netflix instead. Clannad is a prime example as to why. In the interest of full disclosure, I decided to give Clannad a go after playing a fan fiction review game at Fanfiction.net. (The goal is to give outside views on various movies, anime, books, etc.) So, I was reading a Clannad fan fic, and was totally confused about what I was reading, and decided I'd give the source material a shot.

Frankly, I don't see the appeal. Oddly enough, Clannad comes from the very same folks who brought us Angel Beats!, and while the animation and character designs are similar, that's pretty much it. I don't generally like to form an opinion of an anime based on just the first disc, but this is easily one of the most boring sleeping pills ever. The plot is completely uninteresting, and the characters flat and hollow, very nearly to the point of being annoying. And I have no doubt the latter would ring true had I decided to torture myself by watching anymore of the series. In short, Clannad boasts deep and emotionally tortured characters, peppered with bits of comedic value, and action. It definitely pretends to be something it isn't, and I don't understand its popularity a bit. As an added annoyance, Netflix lists this snooze fest as having English and Japanese voice overs, when in fact only questionably translated subtitles are provided.

The trailer makes it look interesting, but don't be fooled. This is fan-made by the way and the best I could find.

Even though I'm not the target audience for this anime so I therefore haven't seen a single second of it, I really like your quick tip on this. I read a lot of glowing reviews for this one on Amazon and looking at this one, it's certainly one of those types of anime that's trying to be more than what it is, and that really annoys me.

I would have liked to give it a thorough review, but I just couldn't make myself sit through any more of it. Like I said, it comes from the very same people that made Angel Beats! - even has a very similar theme with similar characters - except that Clannad isn't funny, the characters are annoying and uninteresting, and the action is just so...scripted, if that makes any sense. There's a really good, negative review on this at Amazon, by someone named Johnathan Chang. I recommend it, because he actually made himself watch the whole series, and then shredded it into tiny pieces. ^^

I read that review, and it was gold.

I skipped this one as well. Nice to see you here again, Steph!

Thanks! Life is pretty weird and chaotic. I was kinda amazed I managed to concentrate long enough to post this. I actually have been wanting to write a couple of complete reviews on Noir and Canaan, but I think real life has short circuited my brain. :-S But yeah, you're not missing anything here.

trust me, there are times that I feel the same way. I've been writing reviews (more than usual) to distract myself from the challenges I am currently going through. Family matters :(

It is good to see you back around here.

Family matters here too, and the fact we'll be moving back to Texas soon. So yeah, I totally sympathize.

I passed on this one a long time ago because I considered the sources that were telling me it was excellent. They enjoyed garbage like Najica Blitz and Hell Girl, so that was enough for me.

I've never really chatted with the guy I mentioned, so I have no idea what else he might like. I just know that if I ever develop insomnia, I can use this anime to cure it.
