It was around midnight when my boyfriend dropped me off at home leaving me with nothing to do but to procrastinate on cleaning my room or chill on the internet for a while. After checking emails, my social networks, and seeing who was online on instant messenger I finally decided to watch the last episode of Welcome to the N.H.K. I started watching this series about two weeks ago. It became an addiction. But when I got up to the 24th episode (the last one) everything and everyone kept preventing me from actually watching it. Something always came intruding between me and my series addiction. Well, I watched the last episode finally and as soon as it was over the only thing I could think of was ... "I have to review this on Lunch.com!" And here it is, my review of Welcome to the N.H.K.
The story starts out with a lone teenager in an apartment room still lying in bed in the afternoon. He undergoes nightmares and strange creatures about a hikikomori conspiracy. Hikikomori is a japanese term for someone who is unemployed, isn't attending school, and neglects a social life. This boy, Sato Tatsuhiro is the protagonist and a long-time hikikomori. When he finally decides that his life can never be changed, his fate came and he met Misaki Nakahara. This girl strives to make Sato her project and change him of his hikikomori ways. As the storyline progresses, other characters are inroduced and Sato has to bend his "lack of social life" around them all. This series is filled with drama, japanese culture, and some psychological elements. I got really addicted to this series because I wanted to know "what will happen next?! NOW what will he get himself into?!"
I don't want to go into more details because I wouldn't want to ruin the series or spoil anything. Some people couldn't get past the first episode because of the strangeness but it's something to look forward to throughout the series. I'm going to read the manga now because I'm sure it'll be just as good or even better than the anime series.
