The original Mahoromatic is one of those juvenile guilty pleasures that I and my friends loved. There was comedy, dirty humor, action, robots and sci fi elements to it. When I saw this new disc in stores and wondering what it could be knowing that the first show was left very open ended, I bought it, took it home and watched it and loved it.
Like all those great anime, that opening intro music and the images shown portray that wonderful place where we can all escape to when life gets us down. Where things are idyllic and your friends are waiting. That could be the first sign of why I like this show as much as I do.
I won't go into to much rigamaroll into the characters since everyone from the first show is back. Tensions are cool between Mahoro and Ryoga and Mahoro's masterclock is still counting down to that day when Mahoro will cease to be.
The main focus on the show is that a shy and clutzy young girl named Minawa has found Mahoro. Shes an android like Mahoro and is taken in by Mahoro seeing her as something of a kindred spirit who needs help. Others around her think theres something fiendish going on with her.
Meanwhile the conflict with SAINT and VESPAR has cooled a new group called MANAGEMENT has stepped in with a scientist and his own Android, Feldran. Things are definetly going on in this series that slowly and surely come out and will lead to some heartache for those who know, or even don't know whats going on.
This sequel show took all that was fun and whimsical of the first show and built from there. While a lot of the fan service is toned down (no big deal) the show keeps it's fun touches. The mood does sting when we see those parties and antics that are going on and then shifting to the more serious drama. As the series goes on, much like the original show, we see as the show goes on a steady slide from comedy to drama with episodes even having more and more drama and less comedy as it goes on to the conclusion and every episode in particular has that ominous warning, that oneday - Mahoro will shut down.
Yes the show does have those perverted elements and jokes like the last one and this isn't super serious drama, but on the same hand, it's also not up it's own a$$ with how seriously it treats things. There are a couple of anime series that I can think of that are like this, but I'll keep it to myself. The finale to the show is also VERY out of left field and open with much debate but for Gainax-the creators I realize that it's par for the course with they're other series.
If you don't mind a little naughty humor with anime then Mahoromatic delivers on that end and it certainly delivers action and drama at the finale. Much like the first show it's all harmless and nothing gratuitous though I can still see people grossed out by Miss Shikijo's attitude (Suguru's teacher wants to make sure he isn't tempted by slightly older girls who might hurt him, all boys need to think about they're TEACHERS) though shes played down in this series. To many it's not a perfect world but Mahoromatic is one of those little worlds like I said, that I wish I could escape to and have dinner at Suguru's house, be in middle school again, compete in the Hiryu Dark Martial Arts Tournaments, battle robots....
Continuing where the first series left off with Mahoro continuing to tend Segurus house, battle robots and this time taking in a new Android girl with a sketchy past. Continues the story and builds on the old series. Great entertainment, with a naughty streak like the last one.
