My American Idol Top 12 (Season 9)

  • Mar 13, 2010
This is my ideal top 12 contestants for American Idol, season 9 list (if I could have my way). I have included reasons why I chose a particular singer as well as my favorite performance of theirs. I arranged them from favorite to least favorite in their gender lists, #1 indicating my favorite female singer and #7 indicating my favorite male singer.
1
Crystal Bowersox
Favorite song: "Give Me One Reason to Stay Here" by Tracy Chapman

Episode 19, aired March 9, 2010

Crystal is truly an unique individual from the way she dresses, sings, and carries herself during and after performances. She has a compelling story and refused to drop out from the competition despite being hospitalized because of complications with her diabetes. She is the most real contestant, at least for me. I hope her courage, confidence, and singing capabilities take her to the final two singers for season 9.
2
Lacey Brown
Favorite song: "The Story" by Brandi Carlile

Episode 19, aired March 9, 2010

Lacey is another fighter. She had auditioned multiple times in the past before she honed her singing and technical talents to make it as a contestant for season 9. She has struggled with the judge's critiques and suggestions, but she still has an amazing voice. There is something about her tone that catches the ear. Plus, she has a wonderful way of connecting with the audience through the television as she sings.
3
Michelle Delamor
Favorite song: "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed

Episode 17, aired March 3, 2010

Michelle had a quality about her that screamed star. I never thought any of her performances were as bad as the judges' claimed. I wanted her to sing more and grow from those experiences. My favorite genre for her was "pop," but her rendition of Creed's song really caught my attention. It was different, and that is why  I enjoyed it so much.
4
Lilly Scott
Favorite song: "Fixing a Hole" by The Beatles

Episode 13, aired February 23, 2010

Though this was an early performance, it struck me as a favorite because I am not a fan of most Beatles' songs. I know...it's very odd of me. Yet, I found myself liking this one, which I had never heard before. I attribute that fondness to Lilly, whose unique spin, attitude, voice, and dress catches my ears and eyes no matter what room of the apartment I'm in.
5
Siohban Magnus
Favorite song: "Think" by Aretha Franklin

Episode 17, aired on March 3, 2010

Even though I am not the biggest fan of Siobhan, she proved to me how great of a singer she is when she belted out that ending note in "Think." She is quirky and different. She doesn't always follow the judge's advice, and stays true to her "self." She also adds her own Siobhan spice to every song regardless of whether she thinks America will like it or not. She is an artist that stays true to her character first and foremost.
6
Ashley Rodriguez
Favorite song: "Happy" by Leona Lewis

Episode 13, aired February 23, 2010

Ashley was different, and I hadn't gotten to see a lot of her because she wasn't highlighted during Hollywood week. Even though I never got a chance to hear too many of her personal stories, I thought she stood out after singing Lewis' song. She had a beautiful, soft tone to her voice that resonated sadness when she sang. She showed a lot of potential as a pop artist.
7
Joe Munoz
Favorite song: "You and I" by Jason Mraz

Episode 14, aired February 24, 2010

This guy came from nowhere and blew me away with his very first performance. I don't remember him being highlighted during Hollywood week, but he had the best performance from the top 24. Joe was also a very likable guy. He was quick to smile and came off modest. He was the epitome of a star struck contestant who couldn't believe he had finally made the show. Joe was the most sincere contestant.
8
Alex Lambert
Favorite song: "Trouble" by Ray La Montagne

Episode 20, aired March 10, 2010

Alex was a late bloomer. He started off very weak and ripened like a banana in a brown paper bag (Ellen's words). He is shy and gets stage fright. Yet, he has one of the most powerful voices of all the male contestants. There is so much he could do with it if only he would emerge more from his little shell. Alex not only hits the different notes, but he has an extensive range. I can't wait to see what more surprises Alex's voice has for the audience.
9
Tim Urban
Favorite song: "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley

Episode 20, aired March 10, 2010

Tim Urban was another late bloomer. Yet, he worked hard and took all of the judge's advice into consideration from week to week. Once he gained his confidence, his good voice and tone came through. He is more of a traditional singer, reminds me a little of a male pop artist. I find comfort in his traditional style. Sometimes having too many unique contestants can get mind-boggling and overwhelming. Out of all the male contestants, he is the hardest working and most improved (close race between Alex for this award).
10
Aaron Kelly

Favorite song: "My Girl" by The Temptations

Episode 14, aired February 24, 2010

I am not a fan of country music, but Aaron Kelly makes me like country music. He is that talented at what he does. He has a compelling story (adopted by his Aunt at a young age) and is an all around likable guy. Who wouldn't be moved by his young, baby face and smile? When he sang "My Girl," I was dancing around my house. It was a fun and light-hearted performance. His performances are fun to enjoy because of his talents and youth. He receives the "cutest contestant award."

11
Andrew Garcia
Favorite song: "Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fallout Boys

Episode 14, aired February 24, 2010

Andrew "wowed" me and the rest of America/judges when he sang a Paula Abdul song during Hollywood week. Since that point, he's struggled to get his songs and singing to the caliber that everyone knows he is capable of. Even though his Fallout Boys wasn't better than his song during Hollywood week, it's still his best performance thus far. He has an unique raspy tone to his voice that is very soothing when he sings. I almost feel like I am listening to more upbeat lullabies. Andrew Garcia has been given the most chances to improve, and I do hope he "wows" us again and very soon!
12
Favorite song: "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell

Episode 20, aired March 10, 2010

Michael Lynche started off as a rather consistent singer until he let his voice out of its little box. He showed all of America what he's capable of with that set of pipes. Although I am not a big fan, I appreciate and recognize his talent. He deserves to be in the top 12, but I keep hoping he will "wow" me with his singing. So far, I've been impressed, but not enough to pick up the phone and vote. He wins the "best vocal over personality award."

Even though I didn't watch this season, Crystal seemed cool from what little I saw of her. I agree, she has a unique look and seems to sing pretty well. I also like that Michelle Delamor covered Creed's "With Arms Wide Open". I remember listening to that song back when it first came out, so reading that here in your list brought back some nostalgia for me, lol.

Yeah, I need to see if Crystal released a CD yet. She probably has. Yeah, I used to love "With Arms Wide Open." Classic song!

I too love Crystal Bowersox and hope that she goes a long way in this competition! I like Andrew Garcia but, as you said, I'm waiting for him to be as good every week as he was during Hollywood Week.

I'm thinking what happened to Didi will happen to Andrew this upcoming week. He will have a "wake-up call" and come back with a vengeance. He has to or he will be one of the first ones sent home.

Awesomeness! I love the way you organized this list. Thanks for sharing, Adrianna! :)
March 14, 2010
Thanks, Debbie! It took me a couple of tries to get it right! I kept losing my data for some weird reason. The save feature wasn't working quite right on the list, but I worked through it! LOL
March 14, 2010
Wow, that is so strange! The next time that happens, it'd be great if you could hit the feedback button to let the team know what's going on, so we can fix it! Glad to see that you were able to truck through it though ;)
March 14, 2010
I know...I figured I should have...but I was being stubborn. LOL! I was determined to finish no matter what. If it happens again, though, I will be sure to click feedback and describe the problem. :)
March 14, 2010
Thanks! That would be awesome :)
