There are over 150 prepositions in the English language. We learned all about them in high school. The rules of good and correct grammar, and who could forget Winston Churchill's great advice?

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."

Of all the prepositions this one is definitely on top. Given this list it would be crazy if it were absent. There are just not any words I can see this under.

Prior to making this list I considered this word many times. As of today I've moved this word out from the top spot regardless of how I feel within. I admit, the movie based on this word, with respect to Pixar, definitely influenced my decision to give this word the fewest words to compete against.

Regarding other words vying for this spot, this is the one I was leaning towards. Upon consideration, and in case of my mind changing, I put it here, but as far as that went there was nothing better to end #3 with.

By showing you a preposition countdown I hoped to make clear how important they are despite what, in the countdown, they're following. Without this word, aside from a few others, you really see its worth. Just giving you something to go by.

According to the list so far this is the longest word on it until I mention a bigger one to move onto. Like many words on this countdown it's uses are endless, because of its meaning that completed sentences can often have their endings absent.

By means of frequent use this word takes this spot on the list, instead of the word a few spots down. Concerning this, but notwithstanding potentially more important words, this one was not written off.

Outside the top 5 this word finally makes a debut where it should have expected to be all along. As you've noted innovative use can raise a word to a spot on the countdown it was not expected to appear next. Instead of explaining this one I'll move on.

Near the bottom of the countdown is a famous word which has fallen out of use despite its coolness factor in point of many plays it's attributed to. Within its former context and today this word, as per history, has left its mark by having no opposite.

Within
Beneath other cooler words lies this gem that many phrases can't be made without. Unlike almost all previous words mentioned this one all has a coolness factor people have really thought through. To make that point is a great quote that has made me like the word a lot more than before. "Within without."

To end this countdown is a word we should all be grateful to. Aside from some exceptions, it's difficult to make coherent thoughts without this word that people would pay attention to. Save previous countdown words this entry is probably the most coherent, but how much attention to the sentence structure have you been following?

I'll be pedantic here and remind you that "but" isn't a preposition. It's a conjunction. Entertaining list :-)

Great list of items by Rambo. Up to ten contain great prepositions, but there are still over a hundred that could be contained within this list!  I can't wait until we get more, ere this one gets knocked off the Just In page (as it is a unique)!

Excellent list! Most people I know have only a few definitions of each of these small, common words. And yet the dictionary lists many uses for each! Why would someone want to end their sentences in prepositions for?

What a random, but very creative and entertaining list, Robby!  I end sentences with prepositions all the time, I'm just that cool ;P  By the way, you should check out @Count_Orlok_22's Pixar Movies list!
