Can't Understand the Hype

  • Dec 28, 2010
These are things that people are flocking to that I have tried and am at a loss as to why so many people are spending so much money for them.
1
3D Movies
I remember seeing The House of Wax many years ago wearing the silly glasses. I got as much fun out of it as my kids used to get out of McDonalds' toys. After the fun of an hour I lost all interest in the effects and realized I was watching a bad movie. As I got older, the longer I look at 3D effects, I start to get a headache. I have tried out 3D television in Best Buy and after about 30 seconds of it, I was bored. Just give me good HD TV and I am fine. As for movies, stop touting 3D and put out something with a good story and good acting!
2
iPad
I hate most touch screen technology. There is something about having my fingers touch a screen (like at some ATMs) that I find creepy. What do I do with this. It is not as good as a Kindle for reading books. It is not as good as a Netbook or Laptop in running business applications. I do not need to spend my day looking at Google Earth and Facebook.
3
iPhone
My daughter has this phone and for many of the same reasons I dislike the iPad, which seems like an oversized version of this, I dislike the iPhone. Give me a Blackberry with it's real keypad anyday.
4
Twitter
I have an account but never use it. Why do people need to know everything I am doing? It is creepy! Besides most of what I do would be boring to other people and frankly I am not interested in trying to entertain people by letting them know I am eating, driving, etc. Let me use the john without having to announce it to the world!
5
Reality TV
The networks have just run out of ideas and do not want to spend any money developing scripts anymore because that takes "creativity." For a lot of the reasons I don't like Twitter, I don't like this genre of TV. I do not like watching poor slubs doing stupid things all day. I don't care about The Situation taking off his shirt or who Donald Trump is firing. If I want reality television I will watch sports.
See the full review, "How I Hate Reality Television and Wish It Would Go Away!".
6
Sports Announcers That Don't Talk About Sports
It annoys me to no end when I am watching a sporting event and the announcers go off on tangents that have nothing to do with the game I am watching. I was watching a football game the other day and in the midst of a big drive, Joe Buck starts talking about the new judges on American Idol. And along this same subject I can't stand meaningless in game statistics like "this is the 50th time he a batted third on a Saturday when it was sunny but the game was played at night." I know that is a little overboard but you get the idea.
7
DVD Players in cars
If we should not text or take cell phone calls in our cars, why do we need DVD players that the driver can see?
8
Mini Uggs Classic Short Womens Ugg Boots
Women claim these are comfortable and extremely comfortable. They are also very ugly and not-sexy.! Give me a nice pair of leather boots over these anyday.

What did you think of this list?

bam yes. I hate Reality tv shows too. RIP Stargate Universe, Caprica and Star Trek Enterprise.

Hah, love the list! I truly cannot understand mini Uggs; they were ugly to begin with, so why did they think cutting it in half would be better? Actually, if they just keep cutting it, and cutting it, and cutting it...

Great list - so true!

What a wonderful list!! I completely agree with you on Reality TV; the most useless sort of TV imaginable. DVD players in cars is also useless if for the fact that the driver can watch it; mini-vans that have them for the kids in the back; I can understand that. Twitter; well, I use it for promotional reasons for my digital scrapping blogs, which has been very helpful, but as far as wanting the world to know what I am doing at this very second does not interest me. I can not understand why there is 3D television; I saw the commercial a while back and thought "who in the heck would want to sit there with glasses on and watch TV at home?" Useless..I agree with you, give me my HD TV and I'm happy. You compiled a wonderful list here!

Great list! I agree with most (not a big Ugg fan myself and probably highly influenced by the fact that my fiance agrees with all of you that these are fugly!). I use Twitter for promotional purposes and it's helpful for that but, I do get incredibly annoyed when people feel the need to overshare their day on it. I'm not rushing out to iPad or the iPhone (I do have an iPod Touch which I love though) and I understand the creepiness of touching a screen but, I'm used to it. I cannot stand the DVD players in cars, that just drives me nuts, so I'd make it #1! I might add Foursquare to the list...I don't get it, unless you're a DJ or a musician where people would care where you're performing, it just seems useless to me!

You've piqued my curiosity and now I have to investigate Foursquare.
December 30, 2010
Here are some reviews of Foursquare to give you an idea. It's a location-based social networking site. So, if you go to Starbucks, you can "check-in" to Starbucks on Foursquare and it's posted on your social media networks, "Sam's just checked into Starbucks @Starbucks Cupertino and the exact address". If you check in enough times, you can be the mayor of the place. But, there isn't any kind of coupon or reward system for doing free PR and being a regular of these places. AND people have logged in at their homes...talk about creepy! I don't want stalkers finding me, thanks!
December 30, 2010
Exactly. Only my wife and kids need to know where I am for emergencies. I don't want weird people tracking where I am. Do a lot of people actually use this app?
December 30, 2010
Yep! And what's worse is they post it on every social network, so that you can track your friends through their daily routine of coffee, shopping, work, errands and home....exciting, huh? I've had to block my cousin's Foursquare posts on Facebook because it was starting to piss me off. While my fiance and I had given up our entire weekend to help another cousin pack for her big move to Oregon, she was posting that she was at a landscaping supply store instead of helping out. She flaked on my brother's 30th birthday just to go to a restaurant and more errands. So, I figured I'd block those so that I could still have a cousin LOL! But, that's what I mean by just incredibly ridiculous behavior- it takes your Twitter comment to a whole other level by geo-tagging you, exactly where you are. It makes me think of Orwell's 1984 in a way!

Very thought provoking list. Would tend to agree with most of your choices but would probably add GPS to the list.
December 29, 2010
I actually like the GPS but I use it as a backup when I am not sure where I am going. I try to map out where I need to go first and then use the GPS. In Manhattan the GPS is useless, especially during the week. Some of the main streets have no turns allowed during certain hours and the GPS cannot know that. I have also had the GPS take me to wrong places and it usually announces you have arrived at a destination well short of that destination.

December 29, 2010
Not big in most of the stuff you have in this list (especially 3D and the ipad) and I see why you would put them here. But as for #8, the right woman with the right outfit, with the right set of legs...WOW! Thanks, Michael!
December 29, 2010
Now with all the snow here in the Northeast, Uggs are everywhere. I should have bought stock in the company.

Interesting list, i do agree on 3D movies and I find the idea of 3D TV ridiculous, as if I´m going to watch my tv with special glasses all the time. I've recently started to use twitter and I must say I'm not impressed it seem to me like a poor mans version of facebook. And reality TV is the most mindnumbing crap ever presented on TV. But I love touch screens and wish everything electronic would be that way so naturally I just Love my iphone.
December 29, 2010
I guess the touch screen thing is just my thing. To me it gives me the creeps like scratching a blackboard. Also, I guess I have oily fingertips because I seem to always be smudging the screen when I use one.

December 29, 2010
Excellent choice for Number One, it would be my Number One as well. If the theaters presented the "regular" movies with the proper amount of light from the projector, there would be no need for 3D (yes, most/all movie theaters do not allow the proper amount of light through the film, making them darker than appropriate). Twitter, I "get." It actually helps me connect more personally with the people I follow. Which makes meeting the people, in person, much, much better. As for the remainder of your list - spot on! Nicely done.
December 29, 2010
Thanks. I just feel that too much effort today goes into the 3D effects in movies and not much else. I remember the first Star Trek film was all based on the special effects (that seemed to go on forever) and had little story so you had a two hour boring movie. They got it right later on with The Wrath of Khan.

December 28, 2010
I agree with a lot of these. UGG boots are "Ugh" in my book. Reality TV is just as unimaginative as you can get. I think if younger folks saw old time TV and reruns of the variety shows of the time, they would begin to understand why the older generation can't stand them. It's a matter of experience. I do enjoy touch though, even though I don't have an iPod or any kind of electronic gizmo. Don't need it for my work and if someone wants me bad enough, use a land line or email. Great list!
December 28, 2010
I guess I am older generation. I hate touching the screen whether it is a computer, ATM or phone. I prefer pushing buttons that I can actually feel
December 29, 2010
We're about the same age, just that I've acclimated to the young kids' methods, LOL. I'm still not hot on iPads and netbooks. I have my old 2004 desktop and that's good enough (with flat screen of course). I did break down and bought a HD TV, but that's it. The 3D craze claims to be better than the 1950s style but I think it only works with certain films.
December 29, 2010
Oh, I also don't understand Twitter. Reminds me of the Usenet chatrooms of many years ago.
December 29, 2010
I signed up for it and used it on and off for about a month and found it pointless. I find it as annoying as the Facebook status updates that people are constantly posting.
