Going Insane!

  • Apr 7, 2011
Let's face it, I'm not the skinniest guy on the planet.  I've been fighting with my weight since I was a child and consistently lose the battle of the bulge.  In college, I began running three miles a day (and there's a very long story as to what actually got me into running) and dropped to my lowest adult weight of 180 lbs.  After graduating college, my weight slowly crept up over 200 lbs. and then skyrocketed to an all-time high of 260 lbs.  Part of the reason my weight ballooned was that medication I was on at the time increased my weight.  Once I quit taking that medication, I literally lost thirty pounds in about a month's time.  Since then, my weight has teetered around the 240 to 247 lbs. range.

Last year, having become disgusted with myself and the way I felt about my body, I decided to go insane.  Yep, I purchased the Insanity workout program.  When I began the program, I weighed 246 pounds.  After completing it, I weighed 230, with a total weight loss of sixteen pounds and five inches around my waist.

Jazzed about these results and feeling good about myself for the first time in a long time, I decided to start round two of Insanity.......but only after a small weeklong break.  This is where I made my first fatal mistake.  That one week turned into two weeks and eventually it became six months.  I gained all of my weight back and lost all of the endurance that I had built over my time with the program.

In January of 2011, I decided to make an earnest effort to start the program again.  It works, but only as well as the person doing it.  After only one week, I gave up again.

Now I turn to my fellow Lunchers, some friends on Facebook, and a few close friends at home, to give me that little nudge I need to complete this round of Insanity.  It will be my third run at the program and hopefully my second complete round.

I honestly believe that if I have watchdogs such as yourself reminding me to get off of my butt and do the actual program that I can again be successful.

I actually started the program on Tuesday, April 5, with the fit test.  Last night I did the first actual circuit (Plyo/Cardio Training).  As if by fate, my scale broke at home and I will need to either buy a new scale or visit the local hospital and weigh myself before I get too deep into the program.

This list features everything that I need to complete Insanity.  With a little help from my friends, I hope that in a couple of months I can tell everyone how much weight I've lost and how many inches around my frame have dropped off.  Who knows?  I might even take a photo in a Speedo to show off my sculpted body when I'm done....okay, NOPE, I won't do that!

I hope you enjoy this list!
1
Cross-training shoes
A man is only as good as his workout shoe, right?  I have an old pair of New Balance cross-trainers that I'm using, but will most likely buy a new pair within the next few days.
2
Bottled Water
Okay, I could use tap water if I wanted to (and probably will a few times, I'm sure), but keeping a bottle of water handy during any workout is a necessity.
3
Hand towel
I remember that when I did the Insanity program the first time around, I used my shirt to wipe away sweat until it became so drenched that I had to reach for a hand towel.  Insanity makes you sweat that much!
4
Headband
Okay, I'll admit that I look like a total dweeb when I wear a headband, but it is a complete necessity when doing any hardcore aerobic activity.
5
Excercise Mat
Excercise mats keep me from stumbling all over the place and sliding all over the floor during stretches and floor excercises.
6
Moral support
What is a man who has no friends?
7
Willpower
Because friends can't always be looking over my shoulder, I have to make myself excercise sometimes.

Insanity: The Ultimate Cardio Workout and Fitness
How can I do the Insanity program if I don't have my Insanity DVDs handy.  Shaun T can't scream at me via telepathy, ya know!

This time Insanity really did a number on me. I strained my left leg and had to sit out for a week with a foot that swelled up. The swelling died after just a couple of days, and although I'm still gingerly moving about during the exercises, I'm pushing on with them.

Update: Thanks to a foot injury not related to Insanity and then a few weeks of both unexpected work at my real job and with conventions, I've fallen off the wagon again. However, I'm not giving up. I'm starting Insanity again tonight!

Willpower is the most important ingredient. Everything else is icing on the cake. Oh, sorry... ;)  Let us know how it goes.

Icing and cake are not two of my weaknesses. Barbecue, beer, and gumbo are. And it's crawfish season too, so I'm fighting as hard as I can!

I count three there, but those three are doozies! I can see why you are fighting the good fight.

Great list! My best friend re-injured her knee after going through this program, so I know it's no joke. I also think that you can download it for free onto your laptop. I am seriously lacking in #7, so it's still on my hard drive untouched. But, maybe I should start it since I really need to build up my endurance, even more so than the need to lose weight. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck, we're pulling for you!

Thanks for sharing your story, K, and great list! Yeah, a cheat week will get ya... Timothy Ferriss says that it's okay to have a "cheat day" a week in his book 4 Hour Body, but I think even a day a week is too much when you have a goal to hit.  So yes, will power all the way.  Good luck on this!  Keep us posted! :)

Thanks! I'll keep everyone posted. I'm currently halfway through week 2.

Despite looking extremely cool, I have to admit that I'm a dork. I grew up on the outskirts of the small town of Oberlin, LA. I have since relocated to the Lake Charles, LA area.I love my home state … more
