11 Awesome Photoshop Web Memes

  • Nov 28, 2011
Every so often, an epic photo pops up on the web that's so shocking, awesome, and/or amazing that it takes on a life of its own, earning viral status.  From Kanye interrupting to Leonardo strutting, and Cera prancing, here are 11 awesome photoshopping trends.
This meme came to be after Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs.  We all know what happen there.  Since then, Kanye has gone to interrupt some very important messages...
See the full review, "Kanye-gate and the Birth of the Kanye Interrupts Meme".
Chubby Bubbles Girl
Though the identity of the girl and the photographer are still yet to be identified, this meme took off in August of 2009 after the photo of a chubby girl with bubbles was posted on 4chan.  Since then, Chubby Bubbles Girl has found herself in many random and dramatic situations...
Sad Keanu Reeves
Sad Keanu dates back to June of 2010, when paparazzi photos of Keanu Reeves eating a sandwich seemingly sullenly were published.  Ironically, he published a book called "Ode to Happiness" a year later, which he claims has nothing to do with the Sad Keanu meme.
Cigar Guy
The Cigar Guy meme stems from this photo taken at the 2010 Ryder Cup.  Not only did it capture the movement of the ball, it also captured a whimsical looking man on the right side of the photograph, later identified as London investment analyst Rupesh Shingadia.  He says he had dressed as Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez to show support for the European team.  Now he often finds himself Photoshopped into great moments in sports history, and then some.
Strutting Leo
Strutting Leo, also known as Leonardo DiHapprio, was taken during the filming of Inception in mid-2010.  Since surfacing, Leonard DiCaprio has 'shopped into various other situations.  No matter what's going on around him, he's still struttin'.
Thundersnow Ice Cream Cone Guy
The Thundersnow Ice Cream Cone Guy meme took off when a photographer covering the volatile East Coast snowstorm of January 2011 took this candid, epic photo of a man running through the snowstorm, looking really unhappy that it was interrupting his eating of an ice cream cone.  He looks so out of place compared to everyone else in the photo.  The man was identified the next day as Washington D.C.-based attorney Zachary Burroughs, and here's the kicker: in an interview that he did later, he said that he doesn't even really like ice cream that much.
Floating Chinese Government Officials
This meme started in June of 2011 when a photo of three Chinese officials supposedly visiting a construction site was published on the home page of China's Huili County's official government website.  Great for PR, right?  Not if those officials appear to be hovering in mid-air though.  It doesn't take a genius to be able to tell that these three Chinese government officials didn't actually visit a construction site, as the caption on their website purported that they were doing.  Since going viral, these three Chinese officials have gone on quite a few other adventures...
Riot Kissing Couple
This meme came about after this image surface of a couple who appear to be kissing amid the Vancouver street riots post-Stanley Cups 2011.  The couple's identity was later revealed and it turns out that the woman was hurt, so the man kissed her to comfort her.  Since the photo has been published, the couple have been found canoodling through many other dramatic events...
Prancing Cera
The Prancing Cera meme came to life after director Edgar Wright uploaded this photo of Michael Cera onto his flickr account while they were in Norway promoting Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.  Given the notoriety of both, Prancing Cera became an instant meme.  You can catch Michael Cera prancing all over the place...
Chuck Testa
Though the video that this meme is based off of was created early/mid-this year, it didn't take off and earn viral status until September, when it was shared on Reddit.  Believe it or not, but this is actually a real commercial for a real taxidermy company in Ojai Valley, California.  So the next time you think that your eyes might be playing tricks on you and that something or someone resurrected from the dead, be prepared for Chuck Testa to pop up and tell you otherwise.

What did you think of this list?

My favorites on here are the Pepper Spray Cop in the Serautte painting and the floating Chinese government workers.  The one with Kanye interrupting the Declaration of Independence is brilliant as well.

This one's pretty good, too:

Thanks for reading, David!

Great list. The Kanye one has some great variations floating around. One of my all time favorite memes is Xzibit and "yo dawg". This one makes me laugh hysterically:

Oh, I love the Xzibit ones, too! Can't see that one, though, unfortunately. Maybe I should start a list of caption memes... Thanks for reading!

My wife recently re-posted the Bubble Girl, so this list caught my eye. Great collection! Do things like "selleck waterfall sandwich" and "shatner beach cocktail" fit the Meme category?
November 30, 2011
Thanks, Kort! The Selleck and Shatner ones haven't caught on as much as these have, but I can see them as potentially going viral!
November 30, 2011
Actually, the Selleck one was popular for a while, though it isn't so active any more. The Shatner one was inspired by that and I hope it catches on at some point. I've got a personal stake in that one. ;] Again, great list. Let's not forget about the LOLcats either. 8'D
