Phrases That I Wish Would Go Away Part 2

  • Mar 29, 2012
I like to carry on the tradition of George Carlin and take note of things people commonly say when they mean something else. Many of these expressions are so overused that they tend to get annoying and I wish that people would just come out and say what they mean.
1
It Is What It Is
Really? What else could it be? People use this expression rather than saying "you just have to accept things as they are."
2
I Have a Quick Question
People are commonly coming to me telling me "I have a quick question" and we usually spend about 20 minutes discussing that question. Unless you are coming to me to ask me what time is it, don't preface your question by letting me know it is "quick."
3
Sounds Like a Plan
When people tell me this I don't know whether we have actually reached agreement. If you think something we have discussed is what we should actually do, then come out and say it.
5
Liberal
Political pundits have made the term mean anywhere from a socialist to someone that radically want to reform the government. If you look at the word Liberal in the dictionary it means to look at situations with an open mind and then make a decision. Hmmm according to the dictionary definition, someone who is liberal is in the middle and can lean either way based on the presented facts. So "moderates" are actually "liberals"?

What did you think of this list?

Terrific list. "Sounds like a good plan." Just adding a word makes it mean something. Three others that have long outlived any usefulness they might have had: "Whatever" and "Awesome" and "At the end of the day."

I consider those for Part 3.

Oh, yes! I'm sick of all of them. As far as single words go, I'm really tired of "journey" and "amaaaaaaazing."

I hate those cutesy names. Also, the meaning of the word "liberal" has evolved through the decades.
