"But The Kids LOVE Star Wars! That's Why I Bought It, Honey!"

  • Apr 24, 2012

Science Fiction fans have struggled for years with Star Wars.  It has been the source of numerous arguments in places ranging from seedy comic book shops to back alley toy stores and even in places known for selling things like (gasp) books!  People can't seem to decide if it is fantasy, science fiction, or a combination of the two.  Others claim that the entire series is a rip-off of Christianity, Buddhism, the Samurai code, the New Age Movement, or any other creed, code, or religion they can dream up.  To top it all off, there are the sci-fi snobs, primarily Star Trek fans (sorry, but it's the truth), who feel that Star Wars is somehow "below" all other science fiction and fantasy because it lacks the "intelligence" or "sophistication" of their series of choice.

Love it or hate it, we all have to admit that Star Wars blows the competition out of the water when it comes to cool toys.  To prove this, I challenge any man or woman alive to hold up an action figure of Darth Vader and an action figure of one of the Borg in front of a child and tell them to pick one.  Guess who will win out almost every single time?  You know it....Vader!  Sure, a few oddballs will go with the Borg, but that is only because their parents forced them to make that choice because "resistance is futile."

In any case, here's a list of recent toys made available to the purchasing public that have the Star Wars logo slapped on them.  I actually purchased a few of these (strictly for my son!), and can't wait to buy the rest of this list!

1
Darth Maul Double-Bladed Lightsaber Toy

Do I really need to explain why this toy tops the list?  It's a friggin' double-bladed lightsaber that looks like the one used by the only cool Sith in the prequels!  Push the buttons on the middle of the hilt and flick your wrist to extend not one but TWO Sith red blades to a length of about five feet!  I bought this for my son immediately after we saw The Phantom Menace in 3-D because not only is Darth Maul his favorite prequel character, I wanted this lightsaber too!

2
Boba Fett Electronic Blaster

Darth Maul's cool look and minimal screen time made him hugely popular with Star Wars crowds, but he can't hold a candle to the original "minimalist" of Star Wars:  Boba Fett.  With just a few brief minutes of screen time and even fewer lines, the Mandalorian bad boy melted our hearts.  Commemorate your love of everyone's favorite bounty hunter with the Boba Fett Electronic Blaster.  Not only does it look cool, it sounds just like Boba's blaster from the films!

3
Captain Rex Helmet
Let's see.  So far I've listed the coolest Sith from the prequels and the baddest bounty hunter from the original trilogy.  I guess that means it is time to list something from Star Wars:  The Clone Wars.  Who else would be listed next but Captain Rex?  He doesn't hesitate to speak his mind and he's even taken on a few Jedi and Sith in his day!  This toy helmet allows the wearer to mimic Rex' voice or talk to other "clones" and Anakin and Yoda as well!  It fits great on most childrens' heads, but if you've got a larger noggin (and there's absolutely no way I can personally attest to this!), you might want to skip out on this toy.

5
Star Wars Fighter Pods
The Fighter Pods line of toys is fairly new, and I have to admit that I'm sort of hooked on them.  They are miniature figures similar to the Squinkies toys that fit into "fighter pods" that can be used to battle against friends with.  I've purchased two of the "Mystery Bags" that feature one exclusive figure and one general figure and a pod to fight with.  So far I have snagged the exclusive "force choke" Darth Vader, an exclusive Stormtrooper, a Lando Calrissian, and another generic Stormtrooper.  The figures come in multiple packs, from the aforementioned "Mystery Bag" to a Millenium Falcon playset to "Jedi Starfighter" sets.  Highly addictive, my wife will probably be banning these from our home soon!

7
Star Wars Return Of The Jedi Vintage Collection Princess Leia (Sandstorm Outfit)
George Lucas knows how to make a buck.  One of the more interesting ways he has done this recently is by allowing Hasbro to release figures based on characters or costumes from deleted scenes from the original films.  I chose this particular Princess Leia figure from a deleted sand storm scene as an example, but there are Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, and many other "deleted scene" figures available for the serious collector.

8
Star Wars Attack Cycle With General Grievous
Outside of Darth Maul, one of the coolest characters from the prequel trilogy was General Grievous.  His asthmatic bark and cyborg lifestyle foreshadowed the impending transformation of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader.  While he didn't survive the prequels, he certainly made an impact on the films with his cool attack cycle that he chased ol' Ben Kenobi with.  This toy features that cycle and comes with a Grievous figure as well.

9
Star Wars Playskool Heroes BARC Speeder Bike
The Playskool Heroes line rivals the popular Fisher-Price Hero World toy line for toddlers and preschoolers and has seen quite a bit of success with its Star Wars line of Heroes toys.  My son wanted this BARC Speeder that features an Anakin Skywalker figure as a reward for some great behavior recently.  The toy is pretty bare bones, as all it does is pull back and zip away with Anakin in tow.  However, it's this "bare bones" aspect that I enjoy the most about it as it makes kids use their imaginations to move the action along.  Plus, my son is very aware of the fact that Anakin eventually becomes Darth Vader, and just had to have an "Ani" figure in his collection.

10
Star Wars Commemorative Blu-Ray Release Figure and Poster Set
Finally, Hasbro released commemorative action figure sets for each of the films released on Blu-ray last year.  Each set features a film poster and four figures from the represented film.  One of the neatest sets is from The Empire Strikes Back, as it features Boba Fett with a removable helmet and a Snowtrooper with a removable helmet as well.  For this list (and for the fact that I've neglected him so far), I present the Return of the Jedi set featuring Darth Vader.

Despite looking extremely cool, I have to admit that I'm a dork. I grew up on the outskirts of the small town of Oberlin, LA. I have since relocated to the Lake Charles, LA area.I love my home state … more
