Science Fiction fans have struggled for years with Star Wars. It has been the source of numerous arguments in places ranging from seedy comic book shops to back alley toy stores and even in places known for selling things like (gasp) books! People can't seem to decide if it is fantasy, science fiction, or a combination of the two. Others claim that the entire series is a rip-off of Christianity, Buddhism, the Samurai code, the New Age Movement, or any other creed, code, or religion they can dream up. To top it all off, there are the sci-fi snobs, primarily Star Trek fans (sorry, but it's the truth), who feel that Star Wars is somehow "below" all other science fiction and fantasy because it lacks the "intelligence" or "sophistication" of their series of choice.
Love it or hate it, we all have to admit that Star Wars blows the competition out of the water when it comes to cool toys. To prove this, I challenge any man or woman alive to hold up an action figure of Darth Vader and an action figure of one of the Borg in front of a child and tell them to pick one. Guess who will win out almost every single time? You know it....Vader! Sure, a few oddballs will go with the Borg, but that is only because their parents forced them to make that choice because "resistance is futile."
In any case, here's a list of recent toys made available to the purchasing public that have the Star Wars logo slapped on them. I actually purchased a few of these (strictly for my son!), and can't wait to buy the rest of this list!
Do I really need to explain why this toy tops the list? It's a friggin' double-bladed lightsaber that looks like the one used by the only cool Sith in the prequels! Push the buttons on the middle of the hilt and flick your wrist to extend not one but TWO Sith red blades to a length of about five feet! I bought this for my son immediately after we saw The Phantom Menace in 3-D because not only is Darth Maul his favorite prequel character, I wanted this lightsaber too!
Darth Maul's cool look and minimal screen time made him hugely popular with Star Wars crowds, but he can't hold a candle to the original "minimalist" of Star Wars: Boba Fett. With just a few brief minutes of screen time and even fewer lines, the Mandalorian bad boy melted our hearts. Commemorate your love of everyone's favorite bounty hunter with the Boba Fett Electronic Blaster. Not only does it look cool, it sounds just like Boba's blaster from the films!
Got AT-AT troubles? No need to worry! Just snag yourself one of these Playskool Heroes Jedi Force Snowspeeder toys and you'll be just fine. This toy features a working harpoon and that legendary tow cable that brought the walkers down in The Empire Strikes Back. It also comes with a Luke Skywalker figure (in Rebel Pilot uniform) and a Han Solo figure (all bundled up for action on Hoth).
What did you think of this list?
