A year after Kevin Smith made his landmark debut with Clerks, he was given something of a small budget and asked to come up with another movie. Clerks could be seen as a catharsis for Smith and others who slaved away in low paying and high irritating jobs and this movie Mallrats, really doesn't say anything.
The story is really just a skittering with two guys who slum it at a mall after they're girlfriends dump them. In between they meet stoners Jay and Silent Bob, disrupt a game show and meet a topless psychic. Smith indulges here with plenty of geek talk, pop culture love and the classic chestnut of "could Lois Lane have Superman's baby" which is something that they made into a Twilight movie later on.
Now, don't get me wrong-the movie is funny. There are some good classic lines here and the movie does keep a good clip but I really think Smith blew his wad on Clerks. Clerks was his movie that said a lot and connected with people on a personal level.....this movie not so much. Yes it's fun to bond with Brody and TK on they're nonsense adventures but other then the fun talk there isn't much there. Smith doesn't HAVE to make every movie personal no, but after what I still think is his only great movie, Smith moved on to relaxing and having fun here and something must have been lost.
Mallrats isn't bad, it is funny but it's nothing else. The characters might as well be silent though cause they sure don't say much. Other then a lot of 4 letter words.
