FOLLY BEACH, THE EDGE OF AMERICA

Cons: It is a quiet town

That is what the sign says as you pass over the bridge on I-17 and enter Folly Beach .... the edge of the America. A small island (connected by marshes and a bridge to Charleston) is quiet and beautiful.

Partially populated by a league of old hippies, there are a lot of hometown crafts offered. Shopping is at a premium here, but they do have The Island Grocery for those last minute needs, gift shops, a Holiday Inn and good food. SUZANNE'S is a wonderful eatery offering gourmet foods, THE SEASHELL, offering your basic hamburg and seafood fare with that greasy spoon touch, and don't forget PLANET FOLLYWOOD, food, drinks and dancing.

There is an old lighthouse on the end of the island that you can visit, gotta walk there though, a beautiful pier that extends approximately 1/4 mile into the ocean (with sinks to clean your fish - yuk).

I have friends that own a Bed & Breakfast, so my visits are free and I try to get there 2-3 times a year. There are breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and the island is on a dolphin run, you can see dolphins everyday. There are your typical beach homes but new homes as well, that are rented for the season, the week, etc.

When you are entering Folly Island, there is a small boat sitting in the marshland, dropped there by our friend Hurricane Hugo. There it remains, far from the sea. As a fun thing, whenever anyone has a birthday, anniversary, or are coming down for a visit, friends run over and paint the boat with your name and the occasion. Sometimes you get to see it, sometimes you don't, because another might replace yours quickly. I can't imagine how many layers of paint are on that boat now but I am sure it is way too heavy to float in the water if it ever made it back. In addition, that is the final resting site of Folly Molly, a truly UGLY dummy with coconuts for ta-ta's, that used to sit in front of The Island Grocery. As a prank, someone stole Molly last year before July 4th and held her for ransom. Ransom was never paid and eventually Molly was discovered in the boat. Unfortunately time and weather did their damage and Molly is no more.

I good little place to visit. Only 15 minutes from Charleston, so despite their town logo, you are not at the edge of America.
