Everyone wants to be DJ at the party... but what about while at work?

@ invited me to join her "turntable.fm" party and at first I was skeptical. The idea is that you invite your friends into an "online chat room" where there are 5 slots for "DJ's". The friends in the room can snatch up the available turntables slots and then each person takes turn playing music for the room.

To play music you can upload files from your computer, or search music already loaded in turntable.fm. I was surprised by the collection available on turntable.fm already, and I managed to find all the songs I was searching for.   The audio quality wasn't great (perhaps because it's streaming to so many people), but it was passible.  There could also be quality restrictions based on their licensing.

If all the DJ slots are filled, additional users can still join the room as listeners. Everyone can then rate the songs as awesome or lame -- enough "lame" votes, and the song is booted and the next person is up. It was much more fun than I anticipated as I enjoyed trying to find music I liked, but also trying to find the right music for the room. It's like a much more interactive version of Pandora.
