Not Your Typical Wedding

There are very few films that I am willing to watch over and over just for the sake of the film itself. I would call these my ‘guilty pleasure’ films, because I have seen them way too many times and still haven’t grown bored of them. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of these films. There was a time in my life when it felt like I could swear that I knew every single line of this movie from start to finish.

When I first heard about this movie, I was reluctant to watch it. Based off of what I had heard, it sounded like just another silly chick-flick about an “ugly duckling” who finds her “prince charming” and gets married. But one winter night, my two little nieces kept spouting out lines and cracking up, so I had to see what all the hype was about. Although the plot is simplistic, the characters are so lovable that they bring it to life.

Simply put, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a “feel-good” movie. It’s like your favorite comfort food. I can’t imagine anyone watching it without breaking into at least a smile. It’s heartwarming and funny and filled with so many unforgettably quirky personalities. If you ever feel like a “pick me up” this film is definitely one to check out.

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is a pure joy, beloved and adored by audiences all over the world. Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) meets the charming and handsome Ian Miller (John Corbett) and they fall in love. There is only one small problem...Toula's big fat Greek family!     The movie is so well-known that I won't elaborate on the machinations of the plot, this film is such a charmer. Filled with lovely performances from the entire cast especially Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin …

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a light hearted movie that touches on good family values. Toula, a low key conservative woman works in her family's Greek restaurant but yearns to find some happiness on her own. She takes computer classes which gives her an opportunity to do more meaningful work as a travel agent within her aunt's company.    At this point, Toula allows herself to be romanced by Ian, a free spirited teacher. The fireworks really begin to fly when Toula's family find …

This movie was "ok" but not great. Michael Constantine steals the movie about a nerdy girl who works in a travel agency. One day she is attracted to a man that looks in. The man happened to be someone she waited on in her father's Greek restaurant. She decides to pretty herself up and then starts to date the man. There is a clash of culture as his family is definately not Greek. The Greek family is shown to be very large and fun going while the young man's family is very stiff and proper. The highlight …

Like everybody else, I appreciate knowing in advance if a film is poor so I can avoid it; also, I prefer to "discover" an especially enjoyable film rather than hear or read raves about it in advance. This is one of three films I saw for the first time without knowing anything about them, the other two being Good Will Hunting and Bend It Like Beckham. Although I consider none a "great film," I thoroughly enjoyed all three but for different reasons I shall briefly discuss.Directed by Joel Zwick and …

Hollywood doesn't do very well when it comes to making movies about families that people actually enjoy watching. To paraphrase Bruce Campbell, I think it's all the spores that are effecting the brains of the L.A. sub-culture. So when a wonderful little movie like MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING comes along and ends up breaking all kinds of records and earning tons of money, it really shouldn't be any surprise to anyone. I saw this movie in the theatre three weeks before the video came out and it was the …

About this movie

It's not surprising thatMy Big Fat Greek Weddinggrew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. ButMy Big Fat Greek Weddingultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film.--Bret Fetzer
