This is one of my all time favorite movies. I can watch it over and over again and it seems every time I notice something new, some clever camera angle or funny comment I missed before. The film is both poignant and funny, wrapped around a charming love story. All of the characters feel real and represent the kaleidoscope of opinions and emotions of the late '60s, and its this contrast that delivers the humorous situations and dialogue so persistent throughout the film.

Oh, and the directing and soundtrack were extraordinary.

One of my favorites. Comedy was so different back then, MASH, HAROLD AND MAUDE, nothing much like that anymore.

yeah - the last scene is memorable to say the least...as is the scene with the scuba diving suit...extremely funny and powerful in portrayal of disaffected youth..they just captured it perfectly...

Every time I watch The Graduate, I'm always struck by how completely funny it is, but in a very understated way. There aren't many films that do that -- especially these days. A movie has to have Will Ferrell or Jim Carrey acting OUTRAGEOUS to be hilarious and I wish that more people could appreciate that. Nice review.

More The Graduate reviews
There's been so much written about this classic movie that I won't bother to write too much more. The movie looks surprisingly fresh for being over 40 years old (especially the blu-ray version). It doesn't look old. With that said, the movie isn't as funny as I had expected or hoped. This classic film from director Mike Nichols, his second movie after the great 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', may have lost its strength in some scenes but other great moments make up for that. The first time we meet Ben, just graduated on a party, every single one wants to speak to him and he is getting really tired of them all. The Graduate is a 1967 American comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols, based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Webb, who wrote the piece shortly after graduating from Williams College. The screenplay is by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry, who makes a cameo appearance as the hotel clerk. The film tells the story of Ben Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

In 1996, The Graduate was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It ranked as the seventh greatest film of all time on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies, and placed #18 on the list of highest-grossing films in the United States and Canada, adjusted for inflation.
