When "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was about to hit theaters for the first time, it seemed that no matter where you looked, you would see the face of Darth Maul. I became so tired of seeing his face that I genuinely became disgusted of his image when he would pop up. When I finally saw him in the film, I immediately thought that George Lucas was attempting to force him upon the audience as the "Boba Fett" of the prequels. His screen time was limited, his look was exotic, and he remained fairly silent while on the screen with just a few words spoken. This made him the perfect candidate to be the next Fett.

Time and maturity softened my hatred of the character, and when the opportunity to meet Ray Park, the man behind the scowling face of Maul in the film, presented itself in early 2011, I decided to chat him up. Park was extremely nice to me and cordial to all of his fans. He won me over as a fan of Maul and since then I have gone out of my way to grab figures, books, and plenty of other things that featured him.

This 2010 Saga Legends figure of Maul is my favorite mold I've come across so far. It is a recast of a Maul figure that came out in 1999. There isn't much articulation, including no wrist movement, which is sort of a downer, but the mold itself is brilliant.

The figure comes with a cloth cloak that allows you to pose the figure hooded or with the hood down. Personally I prefer the hood down due to the fact that the cloth hood looks sort of cheap when it's on Maul's head. Maul also comes with his dual-lightsaber, a bunch of "secret" weapons that can be used with just about any of the other figures in this line, a Galactic Battle Card and game die, as well as a stand that he can be placed on.

Outside of striking a menacing pose, this character doesn't do much else. He looks excellent while protecting my computer monitor, and always draws a few looks from people.

Overall, a decent figure for posing or displaying, but without much articulation, Maul won't provide as much fun for the kiddies when they replay his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn. Hopefully a new mold will be released for the re-release of the film in February of 2012.

Where's my vintage Maul?

This is a good update to the 1999 Darth Maul from the speeder bike, but that's all it is, an update. This figure doesn't have nearly as many points of articulation as modern figures. The legs look too skinny and long for the character (although fortunately they do bend at the knees). The head paint looks better and neater than the original figure.
