You know how people are always saying they come from somewhere else? Well I found it. Half way between San Mateo and Satsuma, just a little south of Palaka, there is a little spot known to us as somewhere else! Take I-17 from anywhere and turn north on Horse Landing (at the flashing light and the 'stop n rob'), and you can find it too!
My brother lives there and I visit him every year since he has moved down there. Just a quiet little berg where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the temp, specially since I am from Ohio. There isn't a lot to do down here but that is the idea of taking a vacation.
He lives on a canal off Dunns Creek, off the St. John's River. Bald eagles roost in the trees, the stars are plentiful and it is perfectly quiet.
We went to a little saloon called Hermit's Cove Marina, a little place where 'everyone knows your name' and there was a lot of playful bantering between bartender and patrons and patrons to each other. It would be an insult to liken it to Cheers, this wasn't more than a club along the waterway.
There is a diner around the corner from my brothers, right on I-17, called Memaws. As the name would imply, Memaws caters to home cookin followed up with grits. A small diner with a little bar, probably sits around 30 people total. The dinner special that evening was baked porchops, taters, grits, soup, pie and your choice of beverage. Price? $6.00, and all home cooked.
Don't expect to find a movie theatre or even a large grocery store, you have to travel for that. Do expect to be surprised by the occasional wandering gator or a passle of turtles sunning themselves. This isn't a major vacation spot. But the nights? So clear and peaceful and so worth the trip. All in all a good evening, someplace else!
Pros: good food, good prices Cons: ummmmm .... pardon the pun Can't figure out how to get this into the restaurant section ... i still need a guide through this site! Best restaurant by far, Creekside Dinery, Inc., 160 Nix Boat Yard Road, St. Augustine, Florida. In addition to FINE food and a great atmosphere and reasonable prices, there is an interesting background. A converted house (large) off 207/I95 … more
