You Will Be Missed...

For those of you who don't know, Paul the Octopus was an oracle that not only inspired millions around the world this past summer, but put a little hope in the eyes of the soccer teams he would pick to win. In any case like this where an animal has the ability to woo over millions of people, its usually an elephant painting for charity or a dog riding a skateboard, but its rare that we see an animal able to correctly predict the outcome of World Cup matches.

Of the 8 matches during the World Cup that Paul was given the opportunity to show his magnificence, he was correct each time. Ya, you heard me. The dude went 8 for 8, but he wasn't perfect. During the 2008 Euro Cup he only went 4 for 6. I guess he need some time to figure out exactly how to predict these games.

I have to be honest, I was rooting for the Netherlands to win the final. When I saw that Paul predicted Spain to win it I was somewhat worried. I mean at that point he had be correct every time. Unfortunately he was right and Spain went on to win the World Cup in South Africa.

Paul will be missed by millions around the world. He brought a smile to some and pissed of others but ultimately I know Paul inspired other animals out there to get up and start predicting sporting event like Paul.

I shall not name my son Paul!!!
Octopus, where I'm concerned, is only good as food :p   Now that I've said that... Paul the Octopus, well the name Paul reminded me of this guy in our university who gel up his hair and always walked in late into the lectures in the middle of winter dressed up in white! Silly guy, everyone knows him. He thought of himself as Prince Charming, nonetheless. In Chinese, there is a term known as "白马王子", which literally translates to Prince on white horse, I presume. Now, this …

About this public figure

Paul the Octopus was a common octopus from Weymouth, England who lived in a tank at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany. Paul became internationally famous for correctly predicting the winner of Germany's seven matches at the 2010 World Cup, as well as the final. He died on 26 October 2010.

Paul's predictions were designed so that he was presented with two boxes containing food in the form of a mussel, each box marked on the outside with the flag of a national football team in an upcoming match. The first mussel Paul ate in a box showing a particular flag indicated his prediction of who would win in four of Germany's six Euro 2008 matches, and in all seven of their matches in the 2010 World Cup. He correctly selected a win for Spain against the Netherlands in the World Cup final on 11 July by eating the mussel in the box with the Spanish flag on it. His "predictions" were 100% (8/8) correct for the 2010 World Cup and 86% (12/14) correct overall. Paul was retired after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The keeper at the aquarium claims that Paul was not the same octopus that predicted the results for the 2008 UEFA European Football Championships.
