Stronger than he's ever been, the Hulk has finally returned to Earth with vengeance on his mind, and a rage that can rip the planet in half. After invading the Moon and smashing Black Bolt, he hovers his ship over New York City, and demands that Ironman, Mr. Fantastic, and Dr. Strange surrender in 24 hours, or he's going to destroy the planet. Earth's heroes as well as the military scramble to find any means possible to either stop or kill the Hulk.

World War Hulk - Gamma Corps

An enemy of the Hulk, a man named General Ryker, has a plan to bring him down. He assembles a team of gamma-radiated volunteers, whom are spliced with the DNA characteristics of several gamma freaks; Hulk, Abomination, Harpy, Doc Samson, and the Leader. Collectively, they are called Gamma Corps, and their mission is to defeat the Hulk so Ryker can study him. Ryker baits the Hulk into searching for him and the battle begins. -summary

While a good portion of the crossovers in the World War Hulk storyline adds some type of substance to the main story. WWH - Gamma Corps. for the most part adds nothing. There's a little bit that helps develop the Hulk as an unstoppable threat but it pretty much stops there. However, the story is far from completely useless and unreadable, as it introduces a new group with believable motives to go after the Hulk. The book collects WWH - Gamma Corps 1 -4, and is written by Frank Tieri.

The story is pretty interesting on the Gamma Corps origin, since they're all based on the Hulk and his enemies, and they possess their powers. They also have a realistic drive, since practically all of them were wronged by the Hulk in some way. They are developed well as a group of cold-hearted killers who will get the job done, and each of their origins are thoroughly covered. The overall story is pretty decent utilizing the themes of revenge, selfishness, and military propaganda, it held my attention until the finish.

The action panels are probably the most vicious in the entire storyline. The Hulk does snap a few limbs here and there, and some of the artwork can be quite sick looking depicting the carnage, and speaking of the artwork, Carlos Ferreira appears to be a beast with the pencils. There's some very nice character designs and backgrounds here.

Unfortunately, WWH - Gamma Corps. is something that will only prove valuable to the WWH completest, as it's not at all necessary, nor does it impact the main storyline. The action panels and artwork pushes it pretty far from the mediocre, and there was an effort towards developing the characters. I say use your own judgment on this one.

Pros:
-Brutal action and good artwork

Cons:
-Adds nothing to the main story

Planet Hulk

World War Hulk: X-Men

World War Hulk - The Incredible Hercules

Yeah not the best in the story but I still enjoyed it, great review.

It was a good origin story that's for sure. Their drives make plenty of sense. But as a crossover, I just don't think it adds much or anything at all.

I thought this series was a little too much on capitalizing on the popularity of WWH, I didn't even finish it in single book form.

Make no mistake, the crossovers were overkill with only two being of any real relevance.

Great review; I'd probably read this for the artwork and get more familiarity with the other gamma-powered characters. Oh, I did make a few more badges, but gotta get back to my homework -- sad. :)

Thanks. If you plan on checking out World War Hulk, then you have to start at Planet Hulk in order to get the full benefit of the story. The good thing about World War Hulk, it's not cluttered with a bunch of essential crossovers like Civil War or Secret Invasion.

I got the first issue of the series but that's about it. Probably I'd go for the graphic novel collection at this point. Thanks.

You're welcome. It was pretty cheap last I saw on amazon.
