Good Question. I'd have to say time of year, distance and location in that order for marathons. For shorter races and training races I'd have to say location is most important.

I heard next year the Bay to Breakers isn't going to allow people to drink along the race, so I guess it'll be just like every other marathon through the City? I highly doubt the people watching/jogging will be half as fun....

Ran both the 5k and 10k yesterday in the South Bay at the Redondo Beach Super Bowl 5k & 10k. As one who runs many races, this might be the best of them all. The course is challenging, a seperate course for each race (instead of 2 5k loops for the 10k). It is hilly, so you better be ready for that.
