Natural Supplements for Dogs
It's really easy to just toss kibble at your pup after long, hard day -- but it's also easy to help boost their immune system or deal with basic issues with a few simple supplements. Here are some of my favorites

2
Garlic as a natural flea prevention method
Garlic has a couple of major advantages - it provides natural flea protection and is loaded with anti-oxidants. I recently read that it's safe for most dogs and is very hard to over dose.
3
Vitamin C
Just like with humans, Vitamin C provides tremendous benefits for dogs with arthritis or muscle issues. I've written elsewhere about the amazing difference adding Vitamin C to my lab's diet has made - this is a dog with a disorder that causes her to grow excess bone. Since adding Vitamin C to her diet, the lump have disappeared, for the most part, and she's able to play with her ball now - a critical need for a lab!
4
Fish Oil
Fish oil is great for dogs for the same reason that it's great for people. It contains lots of omega 3 fatty acids and makes their coats SO soft! Be careful not to overdo it, tho -- if you give them too much, they can get the runs...
5
Yogurt
One of the things I give my dogs if their stomachs get upset is yogurt - just make sure you're giving them a kind that has active cultures. In fact, I used yogurt as a crate training tool for my dogs when they were puppies. Every morning before leaving for work, they'd get a little bowl of yogurt in their crate. Both of them raced into the crate to get their morning treat. They just love it!
6
Fennel
If your dog has an upset tummy, sprinkle some fennel on their food. It's great for helping with digestive problems and has lots of useful micro-nutrients, too.
7
Pumpkin
If your dog is suffering from diahrrea of just has soft tools, a tablespoon or two of pumpkin mixed with their food is great to use to help bring them back to normal. It's really good for helping them build the helpful bacteria in their digest system. My 70 pound lab gets 2 tablespoons daily, and my 50 pound border collie mix gets one tablespoon. So it doesn't take much to make a big difference.

I have always loved animals and have been given the gift of being loved back by them. Seven years ago, I adopted an 8-month-old puppy who was starved and mistreated from a local shelter. In learning about … more
