Folk Rock Collection=Gap's Identity Crisis

  • May 11, 2010

I love Gap. Whenever I am in need of a good pair of jeans I know I can depend on, I go there.  When I need a new crisp white button-down, Gap's the store.  Classic and simple summer dress? I like to fall into the Gap.  Their basics are the best, and for their great designs and excellent quality, their prices can't be beat; this is what Gap is known for.

Patrick Robinson brought a whole new cool to Gap for Fall 2009 though; Fashionistas everywhere went crazy.  The looks were super cool, and I wished I could buy all of them, but when it comes down to trendy pieces, I'm a bit leary of purchasing my goods from Gap.  It just seems unjustifiable to buy a cool, yet simple garment from Gap for $50 when I could run over to Forever 21 and purchase an even hipper version of the same piece for $20, especially when I know the look will be out once the season is over.

This is exactly the reason why it's so hard for me to judge whether or not I like Gap's Folk Rock Collection. There are definitely pieces that I think are great, like the chambray shirt dress and the denim jackets, which I would buy from Gap in a second. I also am a big fan of their tank tops and plain shirts, so maybe I would grab a couple of those too.  But, although I do appreciate their ability to stay on top of trends and what's considered cool, I don't think those pieces are necessarily "folk rock."  The trendier pieces, like the denim overalls and the denim western shirt, are totally cool and could definitely fit into the folk rock look they're going for, but I could never spend $80 and $50 respectively on such trendy pieces.

I think Gap might be having a little bit of an identity crisis with this Folk Rock Collection.  They need to reel in from the Fall 2009 craze, save the trendiness for styling, and stick to what they know best: classic pieces with a modern edge.

Eh, I'm not a huge fan either. They said that they were inspired by summer festivals.... but summer festivals from what decade and what kind of festivals? Agreed that you could totally go to F21 and get a hipper version of whatever Gap has. Skipping out on this one! Thanks for sharing :)

I agree with Amy's review of the Folk Rock Collection. I would imagine more eccentric looks. The looks shown are much more subdued and casual than I would expect.      While I'm all for a casual vibe, I feel like there's nothing really unique about this collection. It's falls suit with my major gribe with the Gap: blah clothes overall.      I guess I'm just into things with a little oomph in the styling, so it would take a great Fashionista to make these pieces …

FOLK ROCK FASHION..A collection inspired by summer festival fashion
With the passing of Coachella and summer on the rise, I get why retailers would want to focus on festival fashion trends. However, the thing I find so fabulous about festivals are the eccentric looks worn by true Fashionistas and their ability to stray away from generic brand name outfits. To me festivals are all about scavenging up some random pieces at a flea market or a consignment shop.  On a recent online shopping rampage, I noticed Gap had a special section called Folk Rock, which is …
