My Favorite Directors

  • Oct 27, 2009
I love films from all countries and all decades and all genres, but not all directors. Here's a rather selective (read: short) list of my top film directors. Rather than explain why they are my favorite director, I'm going to list the three films that I see as being their greatest achievements and I've included links to where you can buy those films in the best available DVD versions and for the cheapest.

What did you think of this list?

Fun to Read

Great list. I'm a little stunned that you included Henson but I guess the man has his own style.

What do people have against Henson? The Muppets are timeless, "The Dark Crystal" stands out as one of the most intelligent and philosophical fantasy films ever, and "Labyrinth" was just light-hearted fun and great music. What's there to complain about?

I have nothing against him, it's just that he seems to be the odd man in the list. I know he's a good director, but I guess his work just isn't my style. Have you seen DAS BOOTE?

To Woo... I'm not the biggest Wolfgang Petersen fan, so I've only seen the shorter version of "Das Boot", but not the really epic director's cut. I did love "Enemy Mine" and "The NeverEnding Story" though. Gosh, all those great '80s movies almost make you forget about how fucked up that decade was.

To Trashie... "The Dark Crystal" remains one of my all-time favorite fantasy films, despite some outdated special effects. It had everything else: quality storytelling, intelligent themes, terrific puppetry, beautiful production design, great music and a strong voice cast. "Labyrinth" was a little weaker since it aimed for a lighter tone and was meant for younger audiences, but it had a sweet message to it and one of the best soundtracks ever, in my opinion. If only Bowie hadn't been wearing those ridiculous tights! LMAO!

That's a nice concise way of handling a list. It could have turned into a major project on each director!

Well, it was easier than doing a bio review for each of them and it allowed me to name my favorite films by each too, so it was (pardon the phrase, which I hate) killing two birds with one stone.

I love most of the directors on your list.  I especially like, as you know, Christopher Nolan and Quenten Tarantino.  But I also really love David Lean, although my favorite film of his was probably Brief Encounter.  I'm also a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick.  Love that man to death.  As well as Steven Spielberg.  I'm not a big fan of Spike Lee, though, even though I did love Malcolm X.

By the way, your links do work, at least the ones I've clicked on.

Good to know. For some reason as I was adding them they kept grouping them all together. I almost put Nolan above Spielberg on account of the fact that Nolan is a more consistently making great films, whereas Spielberg has been screwing about since "Saving Private Ryan".

Even when Spielberg makes bad movies, though, he still does a pretty good job with his direction at least (although you might not get a great movie).  But he seems to be very hit or miss in the days following Saving Private Ryan.  Almost everything he did before Saving Private Ryan I've loved, though.

I think what I admire most about Nolan is that he uses a very unique style when directing his films.  I just wish he had more movies to admire, but he's one of the few directors that has never disappointed me.

I know exactly what you mean about Nolan. While he hasn't been the most prolific director in recent years, his films are all very admirable in both their direction and storytelling. As far as I'm concerned, he may be near the very top of this list someday.

Hopefully all the links work okay. If not, let me know.
