  • May 26, 2010
To preserve the artistic integrity of Tool, one of the most innovative rock groups in many years, I have included their music videos in their un-edited and uncensored form. As such, sensitive viewers/listeners may not wish to expose themselves to what could be considered disturbing content.
This list is dedicated to fellow Lunchers Cenobite7 and Christy.

Since this list is dedicated to our old buddies I'll have to check 'em out. I'll be doing 'em one at a time though since I doubt they're my style.

I don't think you'd appreciate the style of the band, at least not by listening, but I bet you'd be impressed if you knew what the lyrical content was referencing and the complex and innovative musicianship they've employed.

Clue me in.

Well, the band incorporated the Fibonacci Sequence into the syllabic intonation of their lyrics, they have used mathematical formulas as the basis for their rhythm sections, have made numerous references to obscure philosophical ideas, referenced underground cultural comedians, made statements against organized religion, and cultivated a sound that combines different ethnic musical styles while remaining true to their progressive heavy metal roots.

I had to ask.
June 13, 2010
Aren't you glad that you did? Did I mention that they also cover themes of transcendentalism and evolution?
June 13, 2010
Nope. You ought to do a print out of the lyrics like (I think) Trashie did. Save me the whole painful musical experience. I'm still back in the 60s with CCR and and the Animals.
June 13, 2010
Were you a fan of Cream? I've been listening to "Disraeli Gears" non-stop lately.
June 13, 2010
I would have been if then-soon-to-be-ex hadn't played the album to the point where it qualified as torture under the geneva Convention. That and his Dave Van Ronk album.
June 13, 2010
As for lyrics, I would post them, but Lunch might frown upon it. Ask Chris about that.
June 13, 2010
You could put little ammie approved {...} where ever needed. =)
June 13, 2010
Huh?
June 13, 2010
Oh, I added the lyrics here along with the videos.
June 14, 2010
That should take care of it. Just refer us to a different site.

Why not? Can't confine the universe in a box, you know? I tried once and it just wouldn't fit. ; )
June 15, 2010
You just used the wrong box.
June 16, 2010
No, it specifically said "This box is 2x4x1 feet and of infinite size on the inside, hence making it perfect for storing the universe".
June 16, 2010
You can't believe everything you read.
June 16, 2010
Damn it, I have no obnoxious remarks to make to that reply. You ruined my sarcastic fun.
June 17, 2010
Who's the Champ? I'm the champ!
June 17, 2010
No, that was Charlie Chaplin. No, wait, that was the Tramp. Sorry, I've had a bit of wine and am mincing my words. You're not the Champ, that was Wallace Beery and then later Jon Voight. You could be the Chimp, the Chump, or the Chap. None of those titles seem to fit you though. How 'bout we just call you, Your Highness? : )
June 17, 2010
That will suffice.
June 17, 2010
Oh, good, I like that one more.

Ohhh... Blast from the Past. There was a time I was quite convinced these guys lived at my house, so ubiquitous was their music. Certainly some of the most amazing (and, okay, disturbing) videos ever made. My faves were always Aenema and Schism. 10,000 Days has a lot of nice cuts but if you really want to gorge yourself on Maynard J., check out his Puscifer project. Really like The Humbling River: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkxdXj7PxRU

Thanks. Tool is without doubt one of my favorite bands of the last two decades. I'll check out that link. I also really like A Perfect Circle too.

Hope I don't get any slack for saying that the Tool sound isn't really my thing.... But when coupled with those awesome visuals, I absolutely love it.  Great list, Sean!
May 26, 2010
Hey, to each her own, right? So, no slack from me. Tool is sort of an acquired taste and you have to be (1.) a pretty dark, pessimistic person to appreciate their music and lyrics, and (2.) be able to enjoy melodic progressive metal, and (3.) it helps if you have an interest in their quasi-philosophical ideas. For me, that's three out of three, but not everybody shares those interests. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos though.

May 26, 2010
I need to come back and watch all the vids. Nice work!
May 26, 2010
I think you'll like them, especially the ones with the stop motion animation (1, 2, and 4).
