I was skeptical that 'Marley & Me' would be a horribly sappy story with an overly cute dog and no plot whatsoever. Well, I wound out watching it when I was sick and nothing else was on, and I was so very wrong about it. I was smitten – overwhelmed – by how good the movie is. I'm not afraid to admit that I get emotional during movies. Having said that, it takes a really well written film to get me in that kind of state of mind. While Marley & Me is a comedy drama for most of the film, it has moments of real emotion, dealing with real life issues like buying a house and having kids. Just goes to show you....on Sunday I swore to a whole room full of people that I'd never watch Marley and Me. Why? Multiple reasons. A) I can not handle pets in jeopardy scenes. I won't watch Old Yeller, I cried over the promo clip for 8 Below, my mom always thought Lassie was my favorite show, but I always watched with my little heart in my throat and sweat glistening my brow. Let's face it, there are times when a movie studio can mess up a perfectly fine book. Who hasn't left a theater grumbling about what Hollywood has done to one of their favorite reads? That's certainly not the case with Marley & Me - it's a wonderful book and as directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), it's a wonderful movie. The casting could not have been better. Honestly, I didn't expect much from this film going in. I mentally prepared myself for yet another cutesy animal movie complete with over the top performances and a gaping hole where a plot should be. It didn't take long for me to realize just how wrong I was. The film's biggest surprise for me was Owen Wilson's performance. Marley and me is based on the best selling book by John Grogan about a golden lab he purchased to try and fill the need his wife feels for having a baby. The star are Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston...but the real star of the show is Marley...named after the legendary artist Bob Marley.
