No good Deed goes unpunished and no bad Adam Sandler movie will go uncritqued

How amazing it is that we move away from our favorites as we grow up. Things like Ninja Turtle cartoons, Weird Al music and others. Too childish? Too ashamed to admit that you liked them?

Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler were the undisputed kings of movie comedy in the 90's. Carrey in fits and surges is getting away from that image but sometimes comes back, but Sandler has still held onto it for the most part playing these roles only he's easing out of the roles as he grows and his audience grows with him and it's coming more naturally which is why I can still see a Sandler movie and feel that he's grown with me easier.
The plot of every Sandler goofball comedy is that Sandler plays an everyman usually with a hair trigger temper attempting to woo a lovely girl who just happens to find an attraction to him all the while a weasely snake tries to bilk Sandler out of his money and or dreams. Have some cameos or celebrities dropped in, cast some former SNL castmates in other cameos, supporting roles or walk ons and have a happy ending. This time it involves a billionaire's death and Sandler's character Deeds being the heir to a $40 Billion stock share and moving to New York out of his rural New Hampshire. The local slime tabloid show in New York wants all the scoop on Deeds and find out about him and how he will affect the stock and a down on her luck lady reporter needing to maequerade as a maiden of sorts for the naive Deeds and find out more about him.
Is it fun? Adam Sandler movies never shy away from trying to have a good time. I liked this considerablly more then the dreadful Little Nicky and slightly more then the manipulative and wasted efforts that was Anger Management and it's story. I felt that more laughs could have been had by Sandler letting loose more as he did in Happy Gilmore where Sandler punched out any and everyone who harrassed him but here he's not. That leaves the majority of the laughs to supporters in John Turturro who is great as Deed's butler and Steve Buscemi, the aptly nicknamed "Crazy Eyes" who lives back home in Deeds New Hampshire town. I always wondered why such talented people like Turturro and especially Busecemi get these supporting roles in Sandlers movies when they could be great leads in comedies of their own. Maybe it's for the best since they are usually the best parts of the Sandler movies when they're in them.
The thing that is different is the leading lady and the villain almost as if this was the James Bond series of comedies. This time it's Winona Ryder and Peter Gallagher. Winona Ryder while pretty and looks convincing as a news woman who is under the guise of a small town girl next door whos a school nurse. Aside from her asthetic of looking the character and having capable skill to play the part, Ryder has no impact on making the material any better, though a less talented actress would have certainly brought things down. Peter Gallagher is the slime and going all the way back to Sandlers first movie is really no different then the big shot in a suit from Billy Madison who wants Sandler's money and job. Sorry but nothing new.
The biggest thing about this movie that bugs me is the way Deed's finds out Winona Ryder is full of sh**. Instead of calling her on some of the stories she's telling him, the movie gives a cliched shock for Deeds to find out the truth that makes no sense at all and is done by one character to another out of spite. Deeds DOES try and find out more about her hometown with a name that sounds so phoney it can only be made up, except to her surprise it exists and the material given to Winona to BS her way through what she goes through is poorly given and ruined some real genuine laughs.
I don't think I said anything out of school here but Mr. Deeds is strictly in the middle when it comes to Sandler movies it offers nothing new, nor is it terrible say for an ending thats literally tacked on out of nowhere thanks to some more of my friend Chekov and his gun lying around the hotel room, and even in THAT, the gun is missing some bullets. What I do remember though is that nothing about the movie made me want to turn it off and part of me enjoyed it, so it can't be all bad. For all bad, watch Little Nicky. Or better yet, don't.

Once again we agree. I don't go to many new movies but my wife and I went to this flick just to cool off in the midst of a heat wave. It was just plain awful. The original Frank Capra film runs rings around it. Frankly, I can't stand either Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey. I find their work to be very juvenile. Personally, I would rate this about a -3.

I can see why people didn't like this and I think I was a little kind to it but I did enjoy myself. A lot of Sandler's movies are juvenile and this one isn't an exception.

I like it, it was okay. Winona Ryder was probably my favorite part. I still wonder why Steve Buscemi takes these goofball roles in Sandler movies. I guess I at least get to see him in movies.

More Mr. Deeds reviews
Nice guy from a small town is pulled to New York to cash in on a deceased family members mega fortune in stocks and runs afoul of the media and businessmen who continually try to dupe him and make him feel like a rube. Average for a Sandler movie but he's made worse.
