Mega Man started the ball rolling, Mega Man 2 improved the production and length of play and 3 perfected the controls and added even more levels.  Mega Man 4.........by and large keeps things on that level, but doesn't add anything all that spectacular.

The year is 2XXX something, and Mega Man has a new mad scientist to deal with in Dr. Cossack whoes own robot creations will threaten mankind and Mega Man and his trusty sidekick dog Rush are out to stop him.  Armed with his new Mega Buster Mega Man will collect a few new power ups and brave a new set of levels to fight for everlasting peace.

Gameplay is just like the other Mega Mans before it.  Select a stage, climb ladders, shoot enemies, fight bosses and take they're super powers from them to use them against other enemies and then storm the castle to take on the mad scientist.  Wash rinse and repeat.

The graphics, sound track and sound effects remain the same.  Mega Man games in the NES era had some of the greatest music tracks for a platformer.

Mega Man 4 offers the same great gameplay of Mega Man 3, but thats about all.  Short of the Mega Buster add on for Mega Man to deliver larger shots to his foes, not a lot feels new.  Yes, you can get the new bot to deliver random power ups, and theres the Wire Grapple and Balloon Lift but even the Lift was taken from a previous Mega Man game and the Wire is only needed in a few instances.  One demerrit for me is that the Rush Jet does act more like a jet in this game where the jet keeps going in one direction instead of the moving platform it could be in 3.  Maybe that makes it more like a jet.

One other addition, the game is MUCH harder then previous Mega Man games.  Only the first Mega Man game is harder then this one, and that games challenge is high due to a lack of energy tanks to refill your health which makes fighting the final bosses tough.  The level design here is ramped up with tougher jumps to make and enemy placement and the robot masters while tough, DO make it possible to fight many of them with your regular gun and not rely on the weakness weapon.

Mega Man 4 may have added a few things, but some of the additions were taken from other games, or pointless and nothing really new got put in, especially with the twist at the end.  Mega Man 4 is the dark horse of the series and worth another look, just don't look for anything revolutionary or brand spank'in new.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Mega Man's 4th outing plays as good as Mega Man 3, but without a lot of the newer touches but compensates with a much higher challenge. Underrated by large but didn't offer much different.
