Pros: Lovely fresh fragrance, a quality product

Cons: A little too pricy for mean old me

The Bottom Line: An invigorating body scrub with a fresh fragrance

In a bid to save money and declutter the bathroom, I embarked on a challenge in 2009 not to buy any toiletries but to manage solely on free samples and whatever I had already amassed. I was very fortunate to receive a full size sample (150ml) of Weleda's Birch Body Scrub to help me on my way.

Weleda claim that this product "gently exfoliates and smoothes the skin". On the packaging I am informed that "natural wax pearls and pure plant oils gently massage the skin, supporting cell renewal without drying or disturbing the skin's natural balance". Both of these are pretty standard claims so you have to wonder if there is some other factor to justify the rather steep price tag of £8.95.

The product comes in a matt plastic tube which stands on its lid which I can manage to open and close quite easily with wet hands. The instructions for use suggest you should use this body scrub in the shower but I occasionally use it in the bath as well.

The aroma hits you as soon as you open the flip lid. There's a burst of citrus combined with lots of fresh birch smells and a hint of antiseptic rosemary too. Overall it's a very fresh fragrance and it reminds me a lot of the smell of the essential oils used in the steam room at our local pool.

The other thing you notice is the colour. It's a very pale lemon which I think is a lot more pleasing than pure white because it gives you more of an impression of this being a natural product. I presume the scrubbing grains are from apricot shells as this ingredient is listed on the reverse of the packaging; however, the grains are white, not a brown or orangey colour as you find in other products containing apricot shell. For me this is serious advantage because I have a nut allergy and find almond oil and walnut shell are two ingredients commonly found in this type of product - fortunately this one contains neither.

The instructions don't suggest how much of the product to use but I find a small squeeze of about a two pence size is sufficient to do my upper body. I am fortunate enough to have a friend who does my back when asked and about the same amount is enough for this area. As birch oil is supposed to be good for cellulite I also use the scrub on my thighs: I suspect this is more beneficial in terms of simply being invigorating rather than effective. The instructions say you should massage the skin with a circular motion and I find that this releases more of the lovely scent.

The grains are just the right size to scrub well but not too fiercely and the rich cream feels quite luxurious. Rinsing off is easy and there's no residue left on the skin. Admittedly I don't suffer from rough skin on my arms so the product hasn't made any difference in that respect. I do find that it's more effective on my back and this winter I seem to have had fewer of those annoyingly painful spots that crop up from time to time. A once weekly use is recommended but I find that two applications a week are fine.

This is a quality product but I think it is a little over-priced. I didn't know much about Weleda at all until I received the gift and had a look at the company's website but on doing that I learned the company have plant medicine at the heart of their product range. Reading on I also learned that Weleda was founded eighty years ago by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and social thinker who worked in a number of fields including the arts, biodynamic farming and education - quite simply the range of his influence is enormous.
