Unforgettable!

When you enter Borthwick Castle for the first time everyone makes it clear immediately. You are a guest, not a customer. My husband and I arrived and the staff greeted us as though we were expected guests, people they could not wait to see! There is no checkin desk. Behind a discreet screen someone takes your information, and then quickly shows you to your room so you can freshen up before dinner. A bit later someone knocks discreetly on your door. Would you like to come to theGreat Room for a glass of single malt whiskey? You arrive and are greeted by name. The other guests are happily sampling whiskey or another drink if that is preferred. After a very pleasant cocktail hour, the guests sit down for dinner in the Great Room. Dinner is served at one long table. The food is delicious and everyone chatters happily. The Great Room is amazing. You feel that you have traveled back at least 500 years, perhaps longer. We stayed at Borthwick for one night and it was unforgettable. I highly recommend it.

What kind of food do they serve? Local produce? And what was your room like?

Hi Fiona: As I recall the food was someting like roast beef, vegetables, roasted potatoes. From checking the website I see that they have a restaurant now with a prix fix menu that includes things like roast beef, salmon, soup etc. I don't remember if the produce was local. Ours was very comfortable and decorated with antiques and good sized bathroom.

This sounds amazing! How was the room? I love that they personally invite you to the Great Room for drinks. I'm sure that adds to the charm. Thanks Bethany! I just added it. As I recall the most amazing thing about the room, was the view from the castle window. The grounds are beautiful. There were no televisions in the rooms. That was fine with us, as we spent so much time out of it. The bath had a big, big tub complete with floating rubber duckies to play with while you bathed!
