Like most literary and film genres, fantasy has evolved out of ancient myths, and in return many modern fantasy stories, films, and TV series have attempted to recreate a mythological setting within the context of fantasy. Do you have any favorite examples of fantasy storytelling based on mythology?

I guess the Thor comics were my favorite. I have yet to see the film and I understand they have taken some liberties on the original Marvel comics premise.

I've always loved the myth films that featured stop motion animation by Ray Harryhausen (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, and Clash of the Titans). I also am a huge fan of the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, both of which were complex and irreverent spins on fantasy and myth. In terms of books, I always loved Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain, although they were very much original stories inspired by Welsh and Celtic myths and legends. William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream is also a wonderful example.
