fun middle-grade high-school fantasy fiction

Ronnie’s about to start high school and celebrates by getting a spiral tattoo, without her parents’ permission. She makes a very believable 15-year-old protagonist as she switches from breathless excitement to nervous anxiety about her appearance, her dating options, the knack to opening her locker, and more. The commentary on teen life, clothes, boys, and endless book series is pleasingly contemporary and real, and the dialog’s spot-on. But there’s a hidden agenda behind some of Ronnie’s new friends, and the second half of the book introduces ideas that blend small-child interests intriguingly with teenage action adventure. Well-timed questions from a suitably confused protagonist aid in the willing suspension of disbelief. Pleasantly wise parenting aids in accepting Ronnie’s oddly comfortable (and now conventionally fictional) approach to finding a strange guy in her room. And there’s a nice blend of boy-talk and fantasy offered in conversation, plot, and pleasingly age-appropriate relationships. Into the Spiral, by Erin Danzer, is a fairly quick read and gets this new series off to an exciting start. With some fascinating characters, a plot that’s firmly grounded in teen girl dreams, the threat of a traitor, and worlds to defend, this should be a fun series to follow.
