Great character and enjoyable mythology in this short story for middle grade

You don’t have to read the first two parts of the Tale of Four Wizards to enjoy this short story. Author Dianne Lynn Gardner has an enviable skill for recapping what’s passed while telling the natural musings of her characters. Young Kaempie set out with the other three wizards in Silvio but was separated from his friends as he tried to take care of Meneka. Now he’s alone. His younger friend may be trapped, tortured or dead, and Kaempie heads off valiantly to find him.
The realm of these wizards reveals new secrets in this tale. Roots of the feud between Kaemperns and Meneks become clearer, but readers following the Ian’s Realm series will wonder at curious connections between worlds and the possibilities of more. Certainly I’m wondering.
A beautiful short story in its own right, Kaempie adds an enjoyable depth of history to Ian’s Realm. A short fun read with swords, sorcery, wizards, ships, dragons and more, it’s highly recommended for middle-grad readers (and parents and grandparents too).
