Since coming to Lunch.com, I've let a lot of interesting people. People who I've grown to enjoy and respect. I don't follow too many people but who I do follow are people who I find incredibly interesting. When I first dropped by on Lunch Woopak was one of the first people I met. Because he was kind enough to comment on one of my reviews. The first thought of course was, "Who is this?" Little did I know when I began conversing with him did I realize I was talking with one of Lunches biggest contributors. And a man who really knows what he knows. He's got his interest and displays incredible knowledge of them. Since joining Lunch I've probably learned more about the art of reviewing and about outside interest from Woopak.
What follows is a tribute to Woopak. But let's ditch the profile name for now. "Woopak" is a real, living, breathing human being with a name. His name is William. And he began reviewing on Amazon.com in 2005. "Boy did I suck," William says, "I was LAZY!" If there was anyone who ever defined evolution when reviewing, it's William. His first Amazon review being a mere paragraph that reads as quickly as a Sunday Comic in the newspaper. That's not meant to be an insult, only to say they were quick and snappy reviews. If you look at them on Amazon, however, some of them still have a good number of votes. But from writing that first review on Amazon that was nearly a paragraph, his reviews now are lengthy reviews that detail and tell us things while providing a nifty analysis. And he's able to do it with a lot of passion and in such a way that even when reading a "negative" review (in the rare event you find one) you don't get the sense that he is angry or anything about sitting through a bad movie. And for William, a bad movie is an educational experience. "I like to see a bad movie just so I'll know the difference between a bad one from a mediocre one," William says, "Haunting Of Molly Hartley, and The Strangers are prime examples of a bad movie." And his reviews are prime examples of good reviews.
Just looking at some of his reviews and reading about how he does it, it's clear you're reading a well thought out and a well informed review any time he posts something. I follow maybe about fifteen people, but when I get an email in my box saying that Woopak_the_thrill has posted another review... I tend to stop what I'm doing online to read it.
For William his interest comes primarily from foreign cinema. "I always had an interest in Foreign cinema," William told me, "which is why I began reviewing; I want to promote the lesser known things other than H-wood. I guess I always saw more American movies as a child so now, I've gotten a little jaded." With this in mind it gives a better understanding as to why Woopak reviews what he does. It isn't just about his love of Foreign Cinema but also about being able to hopefully teach others about it and perhaps to learn about a different culture in the process. Indeed, several lunchers and myself have probably learned a lot from William. Admittedly I see several films he's reviewed that for the most part I hadn't even heard of. But upon hearing about them... I knew I couldn't resist.
And while William does what he does, putting his words down like carefully pristine tile, he always holds a manner of respect and passion. It isn't just for show in his reviews. Even in the midst of comments he maintains a level of respect. Even in the face of criticism and disagreement. "One thing I've always tried to do is to stand up for my beliefs, maintain kindness to others and above else, respect for myself and others," he writes in his profile. But William also has a heart, thanks in part to his parents: "I was brought up by my parents to believe that a measure of a man is not how much he has in his wallet, but how much he holds in his heart. A man may be poor, but if he works hard enough and never compromises his character; he is beautiful." If all of us lived by a similar mantra there'd be no need for heaven--we'd already be there.

This guy's a douche. I would hate myself if I was him. He should be skewered by the twilight sword and just disappear into nothingness, he should never review again. LOL! Give him a Tombstone Pile Driver....bwahahahah!
