Since the June 30, 1997 release of the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, (retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States) the books have gained immense popularity, critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide.[1] The series has also had some share of criticism, including concern for the increasingly dark tone. As of June 2008, the book series has sold more than 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages,[2][3] and the last four books have consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history.

Sure, agreed. Not all the books are glowing examples of literature. But I think at the same time the books have done more good than harm for literacy and for storytelling.

The whole series is meant for adolescents and young adults, and on that level succeeds. Check Wikipedia and see the number of childrens' awards for these novels. Not just my opinion. And the books in general encouraged reading and the reading habit. Important set of novels.
And the cultural impact of these books alone, on children, imagination, reading, writing, etc., would be worth five stars. The film franchise is worth over $20 billion bucks!
