Pros: Stands up to repeated reading

Cons: May be too frightening as a young child's bed time tale.

How many times have you watched a cat and wondered what they were thinking, or why they do the things that they do?

In this fascinating book, we may finally meet the Queen of Cats, learn why cats have more than one name and listen to the ancient stories of their greatest heroes, and most feared enemies with pricked ears...

Cats are disappearing and game is scarce. Something dark and dangerous can be scented on the wind. When Fritti Tailchaser's intended also vanishes, he sets out to find some answers. Our hero's adventures include pacts with squirrels, predictions by a frog, visions both mysterious and terrifying, and a most deadly battle between good and evil reaching out from the dawn of catdom.

With the help of Pouncequick the hero worshipping kitten, Roofshadow a beautiful, sorrow-stricken, but loyal friend, and Eatbugs the eccentric wanderer who is only truly mad when the winds blow across the hills of his memory,Tailchaser finds more than the simple answers he thought he was looking for...

Tad Williams will open your eyes to the hidden world of cats.Told in a grand manner with fairytale thrills, you will follow this quest with bated breath. A Watership Down for catlovers!

Only a 3? (sigh) I just bought this for my grandson Benji. Although he just turned 10 and is in the gifter program and reads voraciously, he's still afraid of books with small print. Maybe this one will do the trick. He and his twin Alex are really into the Cat Warriors series.

I can see that I'm going to be going thru each of my old reviews to correct ratings. This is Definitely a five for Fantasy Fiction, although not necessarily for very young readers. Ten would be a perfect age, and if he can get past the small print, I think he may add this to his favorites quite quickly. When I worked in a book store, I regularly recommended this work for readers who enjoyed the Cat Warriors or Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole series, and every one seemed to embrace this work happily.

He can be very stubborn. I bought the Cat Warriors book for him for Christmas and it took him nearly 3 years to read. Now he can't get enough of the series!

If you like cats. If you simply like a good story. If you like a book you cannot put down after reading the first page...this one is for you! I first read this book in 1987 and have to admit to having reread it several times. It has a haunting guality about it. The authors's insight to cat behavior is wonderful. The author is also a top story teller. You will not be sorry that you read this one. My highest recommentations!

About this book

Wiki

Fritti Tailchaser a young ginger tom not yet a full grown hunter, is the main catamong a host of appropriately named feline peersin this extravagantly detailed fantasy. When his best friend, Hushpad, vanishes, Fritti embarks on a quest to find her, and so enters the list of jousters against the evils of the world. His many trials and adventures bring him into contact with a veritable galaxy of cats, who speak a language for which a glossary is provided. This feline epic culminates in a decisive battle with an evil cat god. Creating as fully realized a habitat as that of Watership Down and other imaginative animal communities, California radio personality Williams's first novel should engage the fancy of cat lovers.
