A 2010 Tim Burton film based on Lewis Carroll's book of the same name.
< read all 39 reviews You'd think that Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland would be a perfect combination right? I actually did like most of what Tim Burton did with the movie, seeing as I was never terribly attached to the Disney one in my childhood, but I can definitely see why fans of the original film may be disappointed.
First of all, I will start with the obvious. The visuals are really pretty and superfun to look at, especially in 3D. I have come to expect this from Tim's movies, and this movie was twisted, dark, and goofy in his normal style as well. With the Oscar nominations coming out at the beginning of next year, I will say that I wouldn't be surprised if Alice in Wonderland won or is at least nominated for one if not many technical awards.
The acting, however, is not that spectacular. I liked Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, but the rest of the acting, including Mia Wasikowska as Alice. For a relative newcomer, she did rather well, but she was just a tad bland for my taste. Johnny and Helena, Tim's recurring stars, both did incredibly well though and their performances were by far the best things in the movie. The rest of the actors weren't that memorable though, so that's that.
I liked how they tied the story together. The original disney film just seemed more like a series of wacky adventures than a full movie. I liked that the writers gave Alice a problem to solve and set the series of wacky adventures around that. However, there is a problem that i have with this setup, namely it being a continuation of the story rather than a straight-up remake. That is a tricky thing to do, and they didn't really pull it off that well.
All in all, this is perfectly watchable movie that provides a great atmosphere, elaborates on the great characters, and tells the story well, albeit the continuation thing being a little poorly executed. If you haven't seen this, maybe check it out. Even if you're a fan of the Lewis Carroll book or the Disney film, it's still pretty good, even though it's not great by Tim Burton standards.
