Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl-- As Enchanting As Its Title!

Pros: Excellent cast, great story, quick pace, thoroughly enjoyable!

Cons: Nothing. This is the best movie of 2003 so far!!

The Bottom Line: The BEST movie of 2003 thus far. you have to see it on the full screen. Drop everything and go. Go! GO!!!!

When I first heard that a movie based on the Disney ride Pirates of the Caribbean was coming out, I rolled my eyes. First, movies based on TV shows. Then based on video games. Now they're basing films on rides in themeparks? Good grief! I had absolutely no desire to see it.

Thanks to my good friend, ddward, I do movie checks. That means that I get to go to the movies for free and check to make sure everything is in order on the films that I am assigned. Sometimes, I'll watch a movie. This weekend, I was assigned Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. I went into the theatre a couple of times to count the audience, and caught myself watching the screen at different points during the film. I decided that it was worthy of watching, even if it was over an hour and a half long. So, I stayed and watched the 7:20 showing last night.

I am so happy that I did!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is the best movie that I have seen this year, by far! Before I go into any details about the aspects of the film, let me give you a BRIEF summary:

Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) is the governor's daughter that is in love with the town Blacksmith, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). When Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) proposes to Elizabeth, all heck breaks loose. Thankfully, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is present, and saves the day-- only to be clapped in shackles and thrown in prison. A mysterious medallion held by Elizabeth calls to the pirates of the Black Pearl. They attack, and Elizabeth is kidnapped. Will, of course, wants to save her. He enlists Captian Jack Sparrow for help, and the two take off on a swashbuckling adventure to save Elizabeth for Will and the treasure Jack has been seeking for so long.

The cast is absolutely unbelievable. I was never a big Orlando Bloom fan, but now I am determined to be in a movie with him. Johnny Depp, one of my favorite actors, was fantastic in this film. His accent got a little rough every now and then, but his acting ability made it so you didn't care. Geoffrey Rush was great as the villain Captain Barbossa, Jonathon Pryce was terrific as Eliabeth's father, and Keira Knightly - who looks like Natalie Portman and Winona Rider - was perfect as Elizabeth. The chemistry was fantastic.

If you've been on the ride, you'll recognize a couple of scenes-- including the jailbirds whistling for the dog with the keys! It's quite funny.

The scenery is breathtaking and the costumes are awe-inspiring. There is a great deal of humor balanced with drama and horror throughout the film. It is a well-rounded, well-done action movie. There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you intrigued all throughout the film.

I was hesitant to go because the film is over 2 and a half hours long. The movie is so incredibly well-paced that you won't even glance at your watch. It is the perfect amount of time for this film-- More would have made you bored, less would have made you unsatisfied.

Bring the family to see this film. It might get a bit scary for the little ones, since the pirates turn into skeletons. (Which are quite well done, by the way.) There isn't ANY sex, and a little violence. It's a really terrific movie that you must see on the silver screen.

I was skeptical when I first heard that Disney was making a movie based on the Pirates of Caribbean ride in Disney. However, this series has exceeded all expectations. It's a funny, swashbuckling adventure. The plot is basically an excuse to give the pirates as much screentime as possible, but it works well enough and has enough suspense to keep viewers entertained. Johnny Depp really carries the movies as Captain Jack Sparrow, the witty, amoral pirate captain. Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly are …

Hands down one of the best movies of the 21st century. Johnny Depp is unbelievable. The sequels, however....not so much.

Surprisingly, a very enjoyable film, mainly due to wonderful performances by Johnny Depp & Geoffrey Rush. Keira Knightley's not bad either!

In 2003 when Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl first came out, it was hard not to be a little skeptical.  In the first place, it was based off of a themepark ride.  "Is Disney really drawing ideas from a theme park ride?" I wondered.  When I first heard this, my thought was that it must've been a joke.  I told friends and family alike that this couldn't be a good idea for a movie.  It's somewhat cheesy title didn't help much …

Starting in the late 1990's, Disney's theatrical releases gradually lost the popularity and stature they once held. Outside of Pixar, Disney could not come up with the big blockbusters that they used to produce on an annual basis. Then came 2003 and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Coming out around the 4th of July weekend, this movie combines all the essential elements needed for a great movie: good acting, a setting few can ever experience, grand action scenes, unique dialog, hair raising adventure, …

About this movie

Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.

Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, fi...
