I just recently saw this movie, and have not yet seen the second or third, but I absolutely love this. This is a pretty much perfect film. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's everything done right. The acting, the story, the visuals, the score, and the epic battle sequences. It's as simple as that.

The performances were all great, especially Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, and Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. The other cast did incredibly well also, but in my opinion, the three aforementioned actors were by far the best.
Their characters are extremely well-written and fleshed out, and I found them likeable, believable, and relatable. Another thing is I got sad when bad things happened to them. I didn't cry, but I got sad, and that's a very good thing for characters to do. All in all, a perfect ensemble cast for a perfect movie.
I really enjoyed watching the characters, especially LOTR's answer to Fred and George Weasley, Merry and Pippin (Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan) they were very effective comic relief that weren't too stupid or annoying and blended into the Fellowship well. Of course there's Frodo, Gandalf, and the rest of the fellowship, and they are very fleshed out and developed like I said.
The story is well told and well explained so you wouldn't have had to read or even heard of the book to see and like the movie. It also segways into The Two Towers brilliantly. As far as I know, the whole three movies are just continuations of one another with the sole mission of destroying the One Ring. The ending is a bit abrupt, but I know they made it to Mordor, so the Two Towers will probably take place entirely in Mordor.
This is CGI done right. Everything about the visuals and the CGI are simply brilliant. The castles, the shire, the elf city, Mordor, the dark lord Sauron, everything, it was simply fantastic and there is no complaints from me about it. It used a lot of CGI without story and character taking a backseat. That is what CGI should do.
The score is also brilliant and whoever composed the score for it should receive several awards if they haven't already. I had no idea that the choirs in the epic action sequences were actually singing Elvish. That was damn cool, and added to the action sequences by making them far more epic.
This is the perfect blend of everything. A great blend of humour, action, heart, and romance without being jumbled or heartless. Heart was no problem. This movie had everything, my only problem with it was that I thought it was a bit too long. I will see the second and third eventually and will review them as soon as I do.

One of the best stories and movies of all time. Just make sure you get the extended edition DVD. The "extra" material should never have been left out of these. Rarely does a movie live up to a book, especially a book which is one of the best of all time. Fellowship of the Ring delivers! Great version of a great story!

The Lord of the Rings film began filming in 1997 or so, and while it took a long time to get them out there into theathers, they turned out to be well enjoyed films. When I went to see this movie with my son I thought I was in for a long snooze. How wrong I was. This movie grabbed me from the start. With amazing cinematography, special effects, acting, and a storyline that is compelling beyond imagining! All this and a group of characters who are kind of like The Justice League of the comics. It is always difficult to translate the Big Screen to the small screen (no matter how good your TV and stereo are) but, in the opinion of this reviewer, the drama of the movie comes across well.
