Great Spanish Speaking Films

  • Sep 30, 2011
These are some of my favorite Spanish speaking films. The directors are from a wide range of backgrounds--from Spain, Mexico, Brazil, and Chile, and they've directed some of my favorite Spanish speaking actors.   From Penelope Cruz to Gael Garcia Barnal, the actors in these films bring a life and vitality to cinema that I think is often missing in English speaking films.
1
Sea Inside
This is probably one of my favorite films of all time. Based on a true story, Javier Bardem plays Ramon Sampedro, a man paralzyed fromt he neck down in a tragic diving accident. Sampedro spent more than 2 decades fighting for the right to end his own life. Bardem is magic in this film, and he barley moves a muscle! Amazing. The Spanish title is Mar Adentro.

Volver
This film covers some very heavy topics, but manages to keep a farcical edge that made some of the scenes laugh out loud funny. Tthough the film employed some elements of magical realism, the cast was so incredibly dynamic and sympathetic that I found the entire mad plotline strangely believable...

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
Pedro Almodovar really knows how to bring together dark drama and comedy to make a wonderful film. This was sexy and funny, but possibly NOT for the faint of heart. Those who are easily embarrased by sex scenes should probably find something else to watch...

The Motorcycle Diaries (Widescreen Edition) (2004)
The film is developed from the memoir (of the same name) of Che Guevara. It follows his travels through parts of Latin America with his best friend Mial. I love this film. It's interesting, dramatic, fun, comedic--everything you could ask for in a good tale.

Y Tu Mama Tambien
This film, like Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, also had several graphic sex scenes. This movie is both hilarious and heartbreaking. I loved how the two main characters interacted with each other. The chemistry was amazing between them and the lead female character. Loved the kind of messy and somewhat unresolved ending...

I love me some foreign films! I've only seen #5 on this list. The rest of them sound really cool though and I'll have to add them to my to-see list. Thanks for sharing!
