I know I'll piss off some people who only like fancy-pants food that's small, dainty, and overpriced, but I think pizza is among the finest contributions in the culinary world. There's noting quite like a thin crust pizza with pepperoni and jalapenos on it, with a close second being a stuffed crust with pepperoni and bacon. My favorite pizza chains are Pizza … more

A running contender for best food ever! I like mine with pepperoni and mushrooms, but the beauty of a pizza is that so many things go well on top of it that it's ripe for experimentation for all kinds of toppings! It was also a pizza with one slice missing that inspired Pac-Man, so there's that to take into account! Also, did you know the throwing the dough into the air isn't necessary? It's just … more
When Alex Franzen, the genius behind Unicorns for Socialism, suggested Umami Burger as the place to dine for our luncheon catch-up, I decided to swear off all burgers until the day came when I would be able to try Umami. Umami has a unique schtick going on, and while I could attempt to try and explain it myself, I want to finish up this review in time to watch … more
Stop me if you've heard this one … So, this hipster-hippie walks into a bar… and completely loses his eco-loving, beer-drinking, sausage-craving mind. It's a pretty surreal experience your first time (as I must admit, it was for me) … tap-upon-tap of carefully selected California craft-brews line the bar, a mass of fellow lively GRUB-patrons are … more
Ever been to Italy? … Want to go? Don't got the scratch for a plane ticket? No problem … simply put, it's time to GRUB at Roma Italian Deli in Pasadena. I definitely owe a debt of gratitude to my GRUB buddies Meg and Sam O. for turning me on to this quite-possibly-the-greatest-example-of-a-whole-in-the-wall / soon-to-be a favorite GRUB spot. … more
Today's your lucky day … no, you didn't hit the lotto. She's not calling you back. The Lakers didn't even win … but you've got GRUB. And more importantly, thanks to our buddies over at Fairfax by Night (FBN) … we've got Lucky Baldwins. An English Pub by day … which by night turns into a … uh … English … more
Come on … he's not fat … he's just big boned. He's Big Mo … and he's got a slew of belly satisfying subs, all guaranteed to quench your thirst for GRUB. It's been a while now since our buddy Ben G. raved about the giant cheeseburger sub at Big Mo's … but free at last, free at last … I've tasted the fruit … more
1st word ... Shrimp. 2nd word ... Bag. 3rd word ... Holy-freaking-flavor-explosion. Seriously ... how have I survived this long without throwing a pound of boiled shrimp in a bag, adding to it a couple of ears of corn and a few hot-links, and dousing it all with an amazing spicy-cajun-sauce? So when my Grub buddy T told us about The Boiling Crab, it wasn't a matter of when … more

I don't know exactly what I've got … but I'm pretty sure BBQ sauce is the cure. It's sweet, it's tangy, it's sultry, it's … my lover. And when you load it up onto a pulled-pork sandwich, throw in some beans, fries, and a cup-o'-cole-slaw to keep it company … well, be prepared to say "I do." For a while now … more
Am I really that weird? Was I really the only kid who desperately wanted a local pizzeria hangout? There's something just so awesome about a regular spot, a place where without planning it, you'd just know to go there to meet up with your buddies, hang out, and enjoy some Good ol' Grub … basically, I wanted to hit up The Max after study hall. Well listen … more
I was recently contacted by Sky, who just returned from a year in Italy. She has beeen working on a series of short films about the spitituality of food. I thought this was quite moving. I have felt that you can make a real connection with the food you make, if you have the correct mindset. You need to connect with your food on a higher level. … more

How I wish that homemade vegetarian pizza wasn't so time-consuming to make from scratch. Because I do love, Love, LOVE pizza. I haven't had any in over a year and a half. (: p
I love pizza. It is perfect. You can have it cold for breakfast, you can have it for lunch or dinner and if you have leftovers, it can make a snack for later. If it wasn't for the oil and grease, this could be the perfect health food too. You have bread in the crust, milk for the cheese, vegetables and fruits go into making the sauce and … more

Whenever I have unexpected guests over, I make this pizza on the spot. It's so fast and simple, but looks fancy in that rustic-Italian-country sort of way. The flavor combination is classic, works for vegetarians, and there are only four ingredients. Basically: It's no fail! Ingredients Flatbread (The pita-like bread. I like Kontos brand, especially Onion flavor.) Bottled marinara or spaghetti sauce … more
