I often Lunch at one of my best friend's donut shop. Since we've been friends for a while, I grew to really hate donuts and didn't eat them for, literally, years since I pretty much OD'ed on them during the beginning of our friendship. It wasn't until just a couple of month ago that I started eating donuts again and uncovered my newfound love for them, so I'm creating this list through the fresh eyes of a new donut lover.
The list goes as follows: donuts at the top, pastries at the bottom. If you have time to don't rate and comment on this list, I don't blame you; I'd be running out to my local donut shop right about now, too. And while you're at it, you might wanna use my Favorite Cafe Beverages list for inspiration as well ;D
Nothing like a classic raised donut. I prefer sugar over glazed and chocolate. I swear when a donut is covered in sugar, its fluffiness and texture is so much better on the inside. Or I could just be crazy :) These are the fluffiest and airiest of all donuts. Ironic that they don't make me feel the least bit fluffy or airy after eating them. Okay, maybe fluffy in a not-so-good way :x
I like to call these princess donuts. They totally looks like something that I would've constructed out of play doh machine. The taste and texture of these remind me of churros. Sometimes, when I'm hanging out in the back inside the donut kitchen (where all the magic happens!), and these French donuts happen to be super fresh, before they cover it in glaze, I always take a couple and cover it in cinnamon and sugar so that it's almost like a churro.
Like a raised donut... except filled with jelly! My favorite is raspberry, though I do stray to lemon and blueberry from time to time. These were my favorite when I was a kid, but I've learned that super sweet jelly on top, or rather inside, of something that's already fried and glaze is never great for your health. Doesn't stop me from eating one of these once in a while though!
Like a cake donut, except chocolate-y. They're dense, cake-y, and come with a variety of frostings and toppings. I'm pretty hardcore, so I get triple chocolate -- devil's food cake donut with chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles :D
If the devil was a donut, it'd be an apple fritter. I dig my apple fritters complicated looking. These babies are made from the leftover scrap dough from donut making, which is a problem for some people (I never understood why), but definitely not a problem for me. Well, except for the fact that these are fried for the longest and that it has more crevices for oil to seep into, but that's okay, those crevices also get filled with sweet apple bits.
Some people mistakenly call these eclairs. No, they're not filled with cream; it's custard, and its got a donut shell! One time, just for kicks, I filled up a bar with half a pound of custard (yes, I put it on a food scale) till the donut shell exploded, then I ate most of it. I hated myself afterward.
I prefer the devil's food version over the regular cake donut cuz who doesn't like chocolate? When I am in the mood for a cake donut though, I like mine with white frosting and rainbow sprinkles. I call it, the party donut :D
These are probably one of the most dense donuts. I think they're alright. I never understood how people have eaten them plain though. I need at least a little bit of glaze on it. I've always been curious about the etymology of "old fashioned donut", but have never found an explanation for it. Are these like, the first ever donuts?
This is what I eat when I want a taste of donut, but don't want to/shouldn't eat a whole one. The problem with that, though, is that they're so tiny and you can so easily pop 'em in your mouth that one donut hole turns into ten and by the time you're through, you think, "I might as well have just gotten a whole donut". Donut holes are fun, though, when they're made from various donut doughs, covered with various frostings and then different toppings.
The densest of all donuts. Don't think I've ever finished one before! I like heating these up slightly as that really brings the buttermilk essence out of them. Not only is it dense, but it's cake-y dense and really sweet, so eating the very center of it might be a bit much, but the glazed outside -- yum!
A braided donut! It's like a raised donut with cinnamon filling each crevice of the braid. Though they're yummy, they're also huge. Just waaaay too much donut for me! I rarely ever order these unless I'm sharing. I'm sticking to the raised, if I feel like this type of donut :)
*drool* I love croissants! Best when fresh, easy to pull apart and melt-in-your-mouth soft and buttery delicious. Sometimes I use them to make BLTs, culminating in the most unhealthy and fattening sandwich ever. Most times, though, I dig ham and cheese croissants. Mmmmm!
Mmmmm, crispy, flaky pastry crust filled with thick, gooey, apple filling, generally topped with coarse sugar, too, for an extra crunch. They don't look like it, but when they're fresh, they're actually really soft, airy and easy to chew through.
These things are so terrible for me. Totally a guilty pleasure! As if the pastry itself wasn't already buttery enough, they had to fill it with super sweet filling and then douse it with equally sweet glaze. My favorite is the one baked with cream cheese in it. I can be content just scooping the cream cheese filling out of a danish. It's kind of like a cheesecake on top of a danish!
