Many people outside of Louisiana have probably heard of products from companies like Zatarain's and Tony Chachere's, but I don't know how many people are familiar with Ball's Cajun Seasoning.  Ball's Cajun Foods is a company in Lake Charles, LA that offers a number of spices (including salt-free ones) and cooking mixes.  This review pertains strictly to Ball's Cajun Seasoning.

For fans of a lot of Cajun seasonings, you'll notice that Ball's Cajun Seasoning is a finer ground product.  It is an all purpose seasoning that replaces salt and pepper in just about any dish you want to add it to.  It's got just the right amount of spice for anyone who enjoys a slight kick to their food, but also has a perfect seasoning blend that enhances the flavor of what you are adding it to. A lot of other companies out there rely on heat to cover up the lack of overall taste in their products (and I'm not knocking them for that), but Ball's appears to have put flavor first, and I love them for that.

I personally use Ball's Cajun Seasoning as a rub for pork and beef steaks, as well as with chicken.  It's good to mix into a marinade as well to provide even more flavor to your meat.  Whenever I make a gumbo, I toss in a bit of Ball's to give it some extra flavor.  I like to sprinkle a bit on boiled or deviled eggs as well.

I have also come across people who shake Ball's Cajun Seasoning on salads and just about anything else you can think of.

The seasoning features salt, pepper, chili powder, paprika, sugar, secret spices, garlic, celery, and onions.

Ooooh, it does sound like a great rub for meats! Just curious -- do you know what about this seasoning makes it stand out as Cajun? Is it the paprika and chili powder?

It contains at least two of the Cajun Holy Trinity (onions, bell pepper, celery), and I'm betting that the secret stuff includes bell peppers as well. I forgot to list celery on the ingredients, I'll have to edit that. Also, paprika shows up in a lot of Cajun dishes. Then you have to take into consideration that it's made in Lake Charles, which is the western side of what is considered Acadiana (although there is quite a bit of Texas influence in the area, but that would entail a very long history lesson that I don't want to go into) and it's been used locally for many, many years. Lastly, the state of Louisiana has a certification process in which companies can apply to have their products tested and then stamped with a "Certified Cajun Product of Louisiana" logo. Ball's has this on all of their products. So I guess you could say they are official ;)

Hahaha, Woo, before I even read your comment, I read "Cajun Holy Trinity" and thought, "That's officially one of my new favorite phrases and I'm going to use it every opportunity I get". Thanks for all this food knowledge, K! That's some good stuff! I know of Cajun dishes, but never knew specifically what spices made them stand out as such. Now I do :)

That's actually what we call it. You can google it! A lot of Cajun style food starts with these three ingredients.
