I love food. I really love food served in large portions. I've visited very few restaurants and/or homes that can make a meal so big that I have to ask for a "to go" box. One of the few places that makes that short list is The Fat Cat Cafe in downtown Lake Charles, LA.
I've only recently discovered this gem in the Lake Area. They specialize in sandwiches that have just about everything from pulled pork and sausage to brisket and turkey on them. Sandwiches are prepared on a number of types of bread that range from Focaccia bread to good old fashioned wheat bread.
The sides include sweet potato fries and garlic fries and they also offer salads, soups, and other items. There's a kid's menu, which includes some really great tasting chicken strips breaded with Ranch powder.
The portions are massive, even for the kids. The sandwiches aren't just big, though, they taste great as well. Each bite of every sandwich I've had there was good, and I've never had poor service nor cold food either.
What really sets this place apart from others is its theme: Cats. Just one quick look at their menu and you can tell that the owner obviously loves cats. All of the sandwiches are named after famous cats known across the world and/or locally.
My personal favorite is the Cheetara, a pulled-pork sandwich topped off with pecan cole slaw and other excellent toppings. If the Thundercats aren't your thing, you can opt for sandwiches such as the Sylvester, the Morris, the Gizzy, or the massive Mike The Tiger (LSU fans catch this cat's name).
The restaurant has recently opened a second store in southern Lake Charles. I haven't visited that particular store yet, but I'm sure I'll be there soon enough.
If you're ever in the Lake Charles area, give the Fat Cat Cafe a try. Be sure to bring a big appetite, though. You'll need it!
