In the heart of Manhattan on 7th Avenue across from Madison Square Garden is a place where real NY sports fans go before games for the sandwich that I am constantly craving. The restaurant is called Gyro II (not sure if there is a Gyro I) and it is a fast food place serving Greek food and Pizza. There signature sandwich is a Gyro, a Greek sandwich made with sliced lamb meat, salad, a secret and super delicious sauce, onions and oregano on pita bread.
I have had many gyros before including from the Greek section of Astoria, Queens and in Greece itself and have never had anything close in taste to this little treasure served in a fast food joint! I have been going to this place for over 30 years and am never disappointed.
The restaurant also serves other Greek dishes like Souvlaki as well as delicious New York style pizza. There is something to suit all tastes and definately gives you that energy if you are going to a game or concert at the Garden or maybe shopping at nearby Macy's Herald Square. If you are in the neighborhood, don't pass it by!

In SF we have an Escape from New York pizza place that almost tastes as good as the Brooklyn pies, Maybe. I love Gyros sandwiches but sometimes the corner place I go to does not always cook them right. Good write-up!
