Carcinogens and Baby Bath Products- a mix that should not be allowed

Even in the midst of rather challenging (to say the least) economic times, there are certain items worth paying extra for.  For parents of children and infants- it is time to add organic skin, hair, and body products to that list.  Why?  The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics just released a study showing that out of 48 baby bath products  including bubble bath, shampoo and lotion)-23 had small amounts of formaldehyde; 32 had trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane (an ingredient that has been banned by the EU but not by the FDA); and 17 had positive results for both chemicals, which are both known carcinogens.

Well known brands like Johnson & Johnson, Loreal, Suave, CVS, Aveeno, Equate,  Huggies, Mustella, had varying amounts of  formaldehyde and 1, 4, dioxane in their produts for young children.   As a parent it angers me that large companies are legally allowed to place chemicals in products- especially children's products- that are known to have harmful side effects.    The European Union proves to be way more diligent in protecting consumers from the toxic trash fed to us by corporations.  This report should make it clear to parents- that just because it says its good for your children or all natural doesn't mean that it is.

The FDA has stated that the trace amounts are not harmful-but as the author of the article points out- everyday use of trace amounts could have a deadly cumulative effect.  I feel safe in stating that as a parent- it is not worth the risk.   Here is the complete list of products and how they tested- all parents should read this, you will be astounded by some of the names on this list!  Toxic Tub: Product Test results

Thanks Shannon! Although I am already aware of this issue, it is great to see it in the Washington Post, these news have to get out there to unsuspecting parents! I never buy big brand skin care (neither for myself nor for baby) anymore because they put all kinds of toxic things in their products (J & J for example). Maybe when everyone buys their products less and less they will get the message? I sure hope so! Thanks for the review!
