Ideal wash for cloth diapers and whites

We really love cloth diapering. After our experience I don't think I'll ever go back to putting plastic underwear on my baby again. Would you want to wear plastic undies? I thought you wouldn't.

With cloth diapering though, comes the laundry. While I am used to our laundry routine, I am not so used to the 'stinky diapers' that come with using synthetic (microfiber) diapers in combination with a not so ideal detergent. Our diapers were fine for about three months, but then that ammonia stench was settling in and I knew I had to do something about it. There are many great options out there and one of them is the Thirsties Pre-Wash and Super Wash. They sent us a complimentary value pack to test. You will find our results below, but of course yours may differ and will depend on your diapers, your water, and your washer.

EASE OF USE: Normally I would not have anything to say about this with regular detergent. Thirsties though has a great bottle design for their Pre-Wash and Super Wash. I have never seen anything like it, so it took me a minute to understand how it works - but after that I was very pleased with how it works. There is a little measuring chamber, you open the cap on it and give the large main container a squeeze, it fills the measuring chamber to the level you desire. I really love it because I can do it with a baby in one arm. No more spills! No guessing how much you need. Extremely convenient.

PERFORMANCE: We are very satisfied with the results. While it did not completely get rid of the stink yet, it did significantly reduce it. What I like about this formula is that it also lightens stains significantly. We had a few that would not budge and it looks like they are getting lighter with each wash! The Pre-Wash also does not let new stains settle, that alone is priceless.

VALUE: This value pack costs around $32 and is good for 64 loads. You only need 1/2 an ounce of each for a load, so a little goes a long way. At 0.50 cents per load it is not the cheapest out there, but it will give you great results and will help avoid 'stinky diapers'.

ENVIRONMENT: When washing cloth diapers the last thing you want is chemical residue next to your baby's bottom. The Thirsties Pre-Wash and Super Wash really is odorless, colorless, and contains nothing artificial. I have never had to do an extra rinse with this, it all rinses out the first time. It is also completely biodegradable, it will do great with septic tanks.
