Pros: Reported to lower risk of cancer and heart related illnesses

Cons: Impossible to truly test the effect on yourself.

The Bottom Line: While I believe that this product is something that everyone should take, it is impossible to know whether it truly works on people.

I have been an active duty Air Force Unit Fitness Program Manager for quite some time now. During that time, I have been through numerous classes on a variety of different aspects of health, from smoking, to weight loss, to fad diets, to circuit/weight training, and virtually every other topic you could imagine.

As a UFPM, I am directly responsible for the management of the health and fitness for upwards of 800 personnel at any given period of time. This means that I administer all fitness testing, I counsel those that are having weight issues, and I aid in training those that desire the added assistance in obtaining muscle mass, losing weight, or whatever their goals are. Essentially, I am a personal trainer for the military.

This job of course is much different in the military however, than it would be in the civilian world. In the military world, we have to have a certain weight, and meet specific standards, whereas civilians are guided by their own desires. This means that in order for personnel to keep their jobs, I have to be on top of all of the best supplements, training guides, equipment, and methods of training that will yield the best results for each individual user's goals.

Throughout my time as a UFPM, I have tried so many different products myself, read about a large number of products, attended classes, and seen the direct results of members that have used these products. I know what works, what doesn't work, and what you have to do to make these products work.

Twinlabd Grape Seed Extract
The concept behind Grape Seed Extract is that by taking the product you are capable of reducing your risks to a lot of specific ailments, such as:

- Cardioprotection (reduces risk of athersclerosis)
- Reduces cancer risk
- Improves vascular strength (stronger blood vessels)
- Reduces edema (inflammation/swelling)
- Promotes eye health (reduces risk of macular degeneration and cataracts)

The reason that this product is supposed to work is due to compounds known as OPCs. (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) These particular compounds are found in tree bark or in grape seeds, generally those from red grapes. It is believed that these grapes are one of the reasons why the French, who traditionally drink a substantial amount of wine have fewer occurances of heart related incidents and cancer than most other areas in the world, despite their large appetite for unhealthy fatty foods. This phenomenon regarding the French is commonly referred to as the 'French Paradox'.

There have been numerous test tube studies in regards to the effectiveness of grape seed extract, and many have found them to be extremely effective in lowering the risks of heart issues, as well as some cancers. It doesn't prevent these issues, it just lowers the risk. However, one could assume that those that are seeking out this particular extract are already proactive about their health and as such are probably going to eat healthier foods and take in proper nutrients anyway. So those that are taking this product are more prone to having lower levels of disease, because they are already doing a number of things to correct the problems before they happen. Unfortunately, there's no real way to test whether or not these really work on people because of this. This is why tests on animals have been done, and so far they seem quite promising, showing that these enzymes are quite effective in all the manners listed above.

Personal Experience
Sometimes even though you don't know whether or not something works, it's easier just to take it and assume that question it. I have never had cancer, I have never had any heart related issues, but I don't have any evidence that by taking this product I have been fending it off. The odds are I haven't gotten anything because of any number of reason not at all related to this product. However, with no known side effects, I have found that I would much rather take the product, assume the benefits are true, rather than taking the chances and potentially ending up with a cancer that maybe this extract could have prevented. I guess in my opinion, sometimes it doesn't hurt to give your body a helping hand.

What I have been doing lately however, is attempting to drink a glass of wine with every dinner. With all of the research about how healthy wine is for you, and now the OPCs in wine, I have found that it is in my best interest to drink it. This means that I will most likely just phase out the use of this particular product in favor of the more beneficial and proven wine. I find this method of including OPCs in my diet much more efficient and effective and feel that it eliminates the need to take supplements, which is always a plus.
