The Bottom Line: This is an excellent tasty product that goes down smooth and serves it's purpose.
Maybe I'm a health freak or maybe it is my fear of food touching my hands... such as the cheese of a Dorito... but I for the most part try to take care of my body, not so much on purpose, but mostly due to my love of fruits and vegetables over most processed crap in a can/box/bag. I am also very big on exercising and alternate walking and running 5-10 miles 7 days a week. With that said, I am also not the biggest weight lifter in the world. The only weights that I lift on a normal day are the ones in my Toric contact lenses.
However, in a push to start developing muscle and striving towards my goal of looking like something more than a school girl, I have started lifting weights. During a conversation with 'Randy the naked guy' from the gym, who is always walking around talking to people while he's naked at my local gym... I was told that the best way to build bulk is to obviously lift weights, but to supplement with protein as it is a huge requirement for building mass.
So, ever since that day a few months ago, I have been taking protein in a variety of different ways.
Flavor The flavor of this particular Optimum Protein product is Vanilla, however, it comes in a variety of flavors, although chocolate is the only other flavor that I have seen locally.
The actual taste of the product is quite delicious. I have tried several other varieties in the past, all of which have been horribly chalky and flavorless. This particular one, was relatively smooth for a protein product, but had a delicious rich vanilla flavor.
Methods of preparation There are directions for how the company suggest to make the product below, however, I have done a lot of experimentation in order to make it different each time, and I have found a wide variety of ways to make it even better.
The way that I like it the most is by taking TWO scoops, because I need a lot more protein that most who eat more meat than I do. I then add in VANILLA SILK soy milk. I'm not sure why soy milk tastes the best, but it really does. I have tried this with milk and it just doesn't taste as good as it does with the soy milk. You can use regular as well, but I like the stronger vanilla flavor, so I use the Vanilla flavored soy milk. Rice milk works just as well. Since the soy or rice milk is quite a bit thinner than the milk, it tends to mix together really well, and makes the drinks a lot smoother than milk does.
Another method of preparing them that I really enjoy is to take vanilla ice cream, strawberries, bananas, and half of a chocolate bar, with a dab of chocolate syrup. I then add one scoop of the powder and some pineapple, blend it all together and have a banana split smoothie, which is quite incredible. You can also use the powder forms of the banana, pineapple, and strawberries, but good luck finding it, as I have only seen it and tried it once.
You can also drink this with water, and if you really want to be healthy, throw in a scoop of fiber while you are at it to give yourself an excellent dose of supplement living.
Effectiveness Just like any product of this nature, it is really difficult to gauge how well the product works. You really just have to assume that the company is doing what they are supposed to be doing and providing the highest quality product and that it meets the requirements that their label sets forth.
However, in just a few months, I have gained quite a bit of muscle mass, my metabolism has been greatly improved, and I'm feeling a lot better in my clothes than I ever have in the past. While most of this is going to be due to my natural growth, I'm sure that the extra Protein has probably aiding my muscles in their development over time.
Smell I don't know why the smell really matters, but my fiance will only drink products that have a good smell. She has difficulty taking supplements that don't appeal to her sense of smell, as it is so sensitive. As for the smell of the Optimum vanilla, I have found it to be quite appealing. It guess the best way to describe it would be to think about mixing vanilla with flour and you have the smell of this product or possibly a French Vanilla ice cream. Regardless, I like the smell of it and so does my fiance, so it must be good.
