There was a time when it simply did not occur to behaviorists to follow the newer ideals used with dogs and horses of "keeping it positive" when working with parrots. Parrots, which have long been considered ornaments and non-animals have actually proven themselves to be just as intelligent and interactive as a dog. Heidenreich was one of the first to bring the focus of positive reinforcement, long used as a standard with free flight parrots in bird shows, to the world of the companion parrot.
